You Are What You Love Chapter 7 “You make what you want” “Formed & Reformed”

Creation Regained

“What has been formed in creation has been historically deformed by sin and must be reformed in Christ” ….. Al Wolters, “Creation Regained”

Genesis Chapter 1 “Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth”. St. Paul – Velazquez (c. 1650)

James K. A. Smith: You are what you love “The biblical doctrine of creation is not just about where we came from; it’s about where we are. It’s not just about who we are, but about whose we are. Its not just a statement about our past, it’s a calling to a future ……. …..We are not just dawdling around in some anonymous cosmos; we are home. ….. …… God doesn’t eject us from creation; he comes down to dwell with us in a new creation. So the end of the Story confirms the beginning: creation is very good”. James K. A. Smith

“Home” Home: is meant to convey the sense that this creation is where we are supposed to be, and where will be in eternity. This creation was formed by a good God who made it good, indeed very good. This is home. St. Paul – Velazquez (c. 1650)

“Deformed” Deformed: what was formed and good has been deformed by sin. Sin is not merely acts of rebellion it is a description of the brokenness of all things, a sense that nothing we see or experience – even our own lives – exist as they were created to be. St. Paul – Velazquez (c. 1650)

“Reformed” Reformed: is therefore the word best used to describe the mission of God and his people to set the world aright. The world will come to be as God intended it to be – it has been deformed and will be reformed - and we humans will enjoy the new creation with our God. St. Paul – Velazquez (c. 1650)

You Are What You Love Chapter 7 “You make what you want” “Our Ancient Manifesto”

Our ancient manifesto The doctrine of creation: an ancient manifesto – a call to Christian action within God’s world. We are called, first, to “image” God – be God’s image bearers in the world.

“we are commissioned as God’s image bearers, his vice-regents, charged with the task of “ruling” and caring for creation, which includes the task of cultivating it, unfolding and unfurling its latent possibilities” James K. A. Smith

Our ancient manifesto The doctrine of creation: an ancient manifesto – a call to Christian action within God’s world. We are called, second, to unfold creation’s potential. Creation is good, but not complete.

“God places us in creation with an invitation to unpack and unfurl all of the latent potential that God has folded into creation – and commissions us to do just that”. James K. A. Smith

Our ancient manifesto The doctrine of creation: an ancient manifesto – a call to Christian action within God’s world. Third, we are called to occupy creation – to be a faithful presence – caring for the creation.

“It requires recognizing that we are not in Kansas anymore – we are not in the Garden any more. And so the body of Christ is called to be a peculiar people who occupy creation and remind the world that it belongs to God”. James K. A. Smith

You Are What You Love Chapter 7 “You make what you want” “Liturgy in Vocation”

Liturgy in Vocation • The last chapter of “You are what you love” talks about our work.

• Work in the sense of our calling as Christians. What are we here for? To work and cultivate the earth. • Also, work in the sense of our “day job”, i.e. what we do every day. • But the point is of course that these are in reality the same mission. • We are always on mission for God – to “fill the earth and subdue it”.

Liturgy in Vocation • As Christians, we need to know well the story of creation & redemption in order to know how to work well. • In order to work well, it helps to know how things ought to be! • To do a job well – i.e. as God intended the task to be – then we need to first learn to love rightly. • Thus, a Christian lawyer (for example) is a Christian lawyer by his loves more than his laws.

An apocryphal (?) example of vocation • Martin Luther was approached by a Christian shoemaker • The shoemaker asked Luther, “how might I do God’s work?” • Luther replied, “make good shoes at a good price”. • The starting point for a vocation is knowing what is “good” and true. • And (of course) at the same time having the skill of shoemaking.

You Are What You Love Chapter 7 “You make what you want” “So what should we make …….?”

James K. A. Smith: You are what you love

“In order to foster a Christian imagination, we don’t need to invent, we need to remember ………” James K. A. Smith

You Are What You Love Chapter 7 “You make what you want” “Teach ourselves …….”

James K. A. Smith: You are what you love

“We need to teach people how to be human again ………” James K. A. Smith

You Are What You Love Chapter 7 “You make what you want” “Takeaways”

You Are What You Love 7: Key Takeaways • “God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it”. Our Christian mandate from God’s mouth. • The doctrine of creation is not a static doctrine it is our ancient manifesto – a call to Christian action within God’s world. • Reforming: the mission of God and his people to set the world aright. The world will come to be as God intended it to be . • “You are what you love” reminds us what it means to be human. The challenge of our times is to teach ourselves how to be human again.
