You can read Chapter 4 in A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson for extra credit. The title of the chapter is The Measure of Things. Attach a document to an email to me by the beginning of class on January 21 to get some extra credit points. Your summary must have enough substance to convince me that you read it. If two are identical, both get half credit, etc. (Sort of like the conservation of momentum in physics...) The book is on reserve in our library, and available at local libraries and for sale at various booksellers. There may be some in the book exchange, but I didn’t see any the first week of classes.
