To kill or not to kill? For some, the war is within. This country asked them to kill. Their hearts asked them to stop. Made in cooperation with the US Army, this film profiles eight American soldiers - including four who decide not to kill and become conscientious objectors - and four who believe in their duty to kill, if necessary. The film reveals all of them wrestling with the morality of killing in war, not as a philosophical problem, but as soldiers experience it: a split-second decision in combat that can never be forgotten or undone.

“On my knees I beg you to turn away from the paths of violence. . . I say to you, with all the love I have for you, with all the trust I have in young people: do not listen to voices which speak the language of hatred, revenge, retaliation. Do not follow any leaders who train you in the way of inflicting death. . . .Give yourself to the service of life, not the work of death. Violence is the enemy of justice. Only peace can lead the way to true justice.” ~Pope John Paul II, September 29, 1979
