I wish it was Christmas, I can’t wait.

Dad:

It will be nice when Christmas comes, won’t it, honey? But waiting for Christmas coming is especially exciting.

Child:

What do you mean, especially exciting, Daddy? It’s Christmas Day that’s exciting, waiting for Christmas is a pain!

Dad:

Really? It shouldn’t be, it’s excitement time.

Child:

Excitement time? What’s excitement time?

Dad:

Excitement time? That’s the times of waiting, all year around, when you are waiting for things to happen.

Child:

Things? What kind of things, Daddy?

Dad:

Oh, lots of things. Like when you are waiting for a friend to come over and play with you. That’s excitement time.

Child:

Yeh, you’re right Daddy. I get really excited when Bobby is coming over to play. But what else is excitement time?

Dad:

Oh, let’s see, how about when you are about to have a baby in the family, that’s excitement time, isn’t it?

Child:

Remember before Daniel was born? I was really excited!

Dad:

Or when someone is getting married.

Child:

I was really excited to be a flower girl at Auntie Ellen’s wedding.

Dad:

Well, the same is true of the time before Christmas. We call it Advent.

Child:

Advent? What does Advent mean?

Dad:

Advent is the time in the church year when we remind ourselves of Christ’s promise that He will come again to establish His Kingdom, forever.

Child:

I don’t understand, Daddy, Christmas is about Jesus being born in a manger in Bethlehem, a long time ago. What’s Advent got to do with that?

Dad:

Yes, honey, we do remember Jesus’ birth long ago, but we also look forward to His return. Advent helps us learn the importance of preparing our homes, and our hearts, for our coming King. And when His day does come, then we sing of His glory, sharing our gifts and celebrating His meaning in our lives.

Child:

You know, I kinda see what you mean, Daddy. Excitement time, I mean. I got a great idea! Let’s go, get ready for Mom coming home from shopping. We can clean up my room, you can help. I can hardly wait to hear what Mom says when she sees my room all clean and everything! Aren’t you excited about cleaning my room, Daddy?

Dad:

Uh, yes, I think so, I mean, it is preparing for Mom coming home, isn’t it?

Child:

Yeh, isn’t this great? My toys go in the toy box over there, and my dolls go up on the shelf, right there. Wow, this is exciting!

The end
