Use What You Were Given! © Gifts from God aren’t always apparent. But God promises that He has chosen each one of us to accomplish His work by using our talents He has blessed us with. Sometimes our gifts just take a little time to find! Key words:

gifts talents giving sharing serve

Cast: This drama involves five actors – four “children” and one adult who portrays the teacher. The actors can be either male or female, as the names can be changed around as necessary. Set, Sound: There would be no particular set or sound necessary. Costume: Everyday clothing is all that would be necessary for all actors. Light: Regular stage lights will be all that is necessary. Script: Scene opens as the children are seated side-by-side at center stage. The teacher is standing behind them, and begins to move among them as she speaks. Teacher:

Morning children.

All children: Good morning teacher. Teacher:

Thank you all in advance for sitting so quietly while I explain all about our Giving Project for this year.

Jack:

I have a little sister I could give away. Gladly actually.

Billy:

Me too. And I could possibly part with my big brother as well.

Hannah:

Boys! As if you would give your brother away!

Billy:

Likely you are right . . . but make me an offer, just in case.

Kim:

Don’t listen to them Hannah! They are just being . . . .boys!

Jack:

No way, I’m serious! My little sister has a nicer room than I. The way I look at it, she goes, maybe I get the room.

Kim:

Only reason why your sister’s room is better, she keeps it clean! I’ve seen your room Jack Jones! Disasterville!

Jack:

Clean room is sign of a sick mind, I always say. I don’t want to go there.

Teacher:

Children, I think we are off on a bit of a tangent here. No one’s sister is going to be given away.

Billy:

Exactly as I thought, teacher. But, that’s OK, I still come out ahead, I have to keep my sister, I get rid of my brother. Seems fair to me.

Hannah:

You guys!

Teacher:

Girls, the guys are only teasing you. But anyhow, this year we are doing something a little different. You may remember, in past years we have done things like making up food baskets and taking them to disadvantaged families in our community.

Jack:

I remember. I packed the candy. I got really sick.

Hannah:

Maybe if you would remember that the candy goes in the basket, not in your stomach.

Jack:

As if! Well, . . . maybe one or two times.

Kim:

Yeh, right!

Teacher:

Personal favorite of mine was putting on suppers for our single mom’s group. But, this year’s project will involve giving a little bit more of each of you.

Billy:

Look, I’m a giving kinda guy. I got this homework from Mr. Murphy’s math class! I’m willing to make the sacrifice. You can give my homework to some poor needy child somewhere.

As the other children hear this, they all chuckle. Teacher, authoritative: Thank you, Billy, for your very kind offer, I know how much it pained you to give up your precious homework. But no, I am afraid this has nothing to do with homework. For our Giving Project this year, you will be giving away your gifts. All the children look at each other, visibly puzzled.

Hannah, raising her hand: Hey, wait a minute here! I talked my dad into giving me a mountain bike. And like I’m gonna give that gift away? I don’t think so Tim! Errr, Teacher. Sorry. Billy:

Or the Harley Davidson motorcycle my mom is giving me today for being such a classy guy. Vrrrrooommmm!

Kim:

That’s exactly right, I mean we shouldn’t have to give our gifts aw . . . . .(turns to look at Billy) what did you just say, Billy! Your mom is not giving you a motorcycle!

Billy:

I know, she’s not giving me a mountain bike either, but it sounded much better than Hannah’s bike. No way I was gonna get beaten out by a . . . . girl!

Jack:

This thought just in, Teacher, but maybe we should compromise and go back to the food baskets again this year.

Teacher:

Gift baskets were good, but we need to look at giving more of ourselves.

Jack:

Not sure about the rest of you guys but I have kind of grown attached to myself. If I gave parts of me away I think I would miss me.

Kim:

I don’t think that’s what Teacher was meaning, do you Hannah?

Hannah:

In a word, I don’t think there’s even a chance that’s what Teacher meant Kim.

Billy:

Let’s see, (counting on fingers), I .. don’t . . .think . . .

Teacher:

No, that wasn’t where I was going at all.

Jack:

Then how are we supposed to give away our gifts? I don’t have anything! I mean it’s still two and a half months ‘til my birthday, and I’ve been asking for the new Space Monsters video game. If you think I’m gonna give that away to someone else after all the dishes I’ve had to do, you’re just bad bad wrong is all! Bad bad wrong-o!

Teacher, smiling: Relax, Jack, I am not talking about giving away your birthday presents. Guys, have you all forgotten about the gifts you already have? Kim:

Uh, Teacher, you’re fogging out on me here! I don’t have any gifts to give. Why, I would have to spend the whole day at the mall trying to find something to give, first! (pause) Ummmmmm, at the mall, huh? On second thought, listen, maybe I’ll just stroll down to the mall and look around. Would you mind telling Mr. Heinrichs in Phys Ed that I am

terribly sorry but I will have to skip his class today, giving away gifts, he’ll understand, I’m quite sure. Teacher:

Sit! I guess you guys really have forgotten! Don’t you remember a while back when we talked about giving of ourselves?

Billy:

Doesn’t that mean that we are supposed to pick some stuff that we are good at and use that talent for helping other people?

Teacher:

Good start, Billy. Yes, we have to discover what gifts God has blessed each of us with and then use those gifts to serve God and others.

Hannah:

Well, I really like to sing, and my Mom told me that my singing voice was a gift from God. But how can I use it to serve?

Teacher:

Hannah, you have a lovely singing voice. You can sing beautiful songs of praise to others. That will help teach others about the love that God has for them!

Jack:

I could sing as well. (sings badly off key) Cure the lame, heal the blind that voice will, oh yes.

Billy:

I would like to make a special request for your singing, please Jack.

Jack:

Just name it ma boy! Just think, some day you may have to pay to hear this fella sing! So what’s your request?

Billy:

On a hill far away.

Jack:

Not sure I know that song.

Billy:

No, that’s not the song, that’s what I am asking you to do, go to a hill far away if you’re gonna sing.

Kim:

You guys! You know, I just thought of something. I can play the piano, so maybe I can play for Hannah while she sings!

Teacher:

That’s it! Now you are really exploring how to use your gifts for God. Who is next?

As children are talking, Jack leans over in his chair, and (carefully) falls off. Everyone looks over and stifles a chuckle. When Jack stands up, he jokingly takes a bow. Jack, bowing:

Thank you, thank you! And now, for my next number . . .

Teacher:

Jack, you always are the comedian, aren't you! Did you know that your sense of humor is a God-given gift?

Jack:

Really? How can I use that to serve God and others?

Teacher:

You could organize a drama group to perform skits and stories that show others God’s love for them. That could be very exciting! Perform in church, in the mall, out on the streets. People who would never think of going to church will drop by and listen to your drama. Just remember, preaching is hard work.

Jack:

Preaching? I’m no preacher! I’m just a kid.

Teacher:

No one is “just” anything when they are working for the Lord, using their God-given gifts. And that is preaching, doesn’t matter if your are four or one hundred and four.

Jack:

Cool! Way out cool! Me, preaching. Wow!

Billy:

Wait a minute, wait a minute! What about me? I mean, I can’t sing or play any instruments. I’m really not very funny, either. I think God must have skipped me when He was handing out gifts.

Teacher:

Now Billy, you know that isn’t true. God has blessed each one of us with very unique gifts. In fact, I can think of one of your gifts right now.

Billy, confused: Teacher:

Me? I have gifts? What gifts do I have?

You have one of the warmest smiles I have ever seen. Do you remember when we had that family from out of town visit our church? They didn’t know anyone at our church, but you went right up to their children and invited them to come to our Sunday School class. You know, not everyone could do that. You have a real gift for making people feel special and welcome.

Billy, embarrassed: Oh, well, that was no big thing. I just didn’t want them being lonely, that’s all. Teacher:

One thing you have to remember, is never ever downplay the gifts God has given you. God has made each one of us very special, and if He has taken that much time to create the gifts in us, then we owe it to Him to use these gifts to serve others.

Hannah:

I think this sounds like a great Giving Project, Teacher! When do we start?

Teacher:

Well, let’s get planning right now!

As the children and the teacher move in closer together, Jack leans to the side on his chair. Again, he falls off. Obviously embarrassed by everyone’s laughter, he quickly gets up. Jack:

Uh, there I go again, using my God given gifts to serve others! Will I ever stop?

Kim:

We can always hope so. We sure can always hope so!

Jack:

Good one, Kim! That was an almost kinda good one!

Kim:

Just like you, Jack, usin’ the gifts God has given me.

Scene closes as lights slowly fade to black.
