Chautauqua: Springfield Water Management Chautauqua's spring series continues the theme of "Our Challenging World" as we explore the topic of water. Water is an essential substance for life that when its supply is disrupted it can create chaos for communities and entire regions. On Thurs., April 14, from 1-3 p.m. at the Trutter Center, Chautauqua will present speakers from CWLP and Springfield's Metro Sanitary District. We will learn about the sources and treatment of Springfield's drinking water as well as the treatment of sewage, water quality regulations and the agencies that monitor the city's treatment plants. Prior to 1929 there were no treatment plants in the area and raw sewage flowed into ditches, creeks and rivers. With the passage of a city bond referendum, Spring Creek treatment plant was built, and in 1973, the Sugar Creek plant was added on to this. Currently the district serves over 150,000 people in the Springfield Metro district. Ted Meckes, CWLP Water Division Manager, and Kim Lucas, CWLP chemist, will be speaking about the water purification process and safeguards. Chautauqua's May program will continue the discussion on Springfield's future water sources, sewer infrastructure, funding and taxation, aquifers and wetlands preservation. In June we will expand the conversation to national and international water management. Registration is required for this program. COURSE CODE: LLL 115-04 QUESTIONS? → Nancy Gillespie 546-6927 [email protected] WOW trips are scheduled on Wednesdays. Registration cost covers the charter bus transportation and the driver’s gratuity. In addition, the trip may require a cash fee to cover other costs such as meals, tickets, or tours. The motor coach departs from the J.C. Penney south parking lot at the corner of South Grand and Dirksen Parkway in Springfield. Please wear your ALL name tag! Exact costs and times are listed within the article.

WOW: A Visit to Hannibal Come join us on Wed., April 20 as we visit Mark Twain and Molly Brown in Hannibal, MO! Tour the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum properties. Have free time on your own (OYO) in Historic Hannibal: have lunch, shop, visit art galleries and studios or other sites. If the weather permits just sit by the riverside and watch the Mississippi River rolling by! BRT CANCELLATION POLICY If for any reason the scheduled speaker cancels or is replaced after the speaker has been announced in the UPDATE, members will be informed via an ALL "email blast." Members who have already registered but lack an email address will be informed by telephone. In accordance with ALL BRT policy, members who have registered for a BRT may cancel a week before the BRT and receive a full refund. If a replacement speaker has not been found by that time, we will cancel the BRT and inform everyone who has registered. Those registrants will receive a full refund. However, if we have a replacement speaker by the scheduled time, no refund will be made. Once we've given the MCL Cafeteria a count, we are obliged to pay for that number of people whether or not we have a speaker. Breakfast would still be served and we would still have use of the room for socializing.

Book Lovers The book group will meet Wed., April 27, to discuss Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. “Sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal.” A murder…A tragic accident…Or just parents behaving badly? What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny, biting, and passionate. She remembers everything and forgives no one. Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare, but she is paying a price for the illusion of perfection. New to town, single mom, Jane, is so young that another mother mistakes her for a nanny. She comes with a mysterious past and a sadness beyond her years. These three women are at different crossroads, but they will all wind up in the same shocking place. Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive. Book Lovers meet at 1 p.m. in Montgomery Hall, room 1142. QUESTIONS? → Pat Veseling 546-2032 [email protected] QUESTIONS? → Mary Emerick 732-1854 [email protected]

The deadline submission for UPDATE articles for the May issue is due no later than APRIL 1 to [email protected]. Letter from the Liaison Community Education enjoys the best of all worlds here at LLCC as we are privileged to work with all age groups from 5 to 105. We not only have the pleasure of working with the Academy of Lifelong Learning for those ages 50 and up, but we also work with youth for College for Kids. College for Kids classes and programs are offered throughout the year for students ages 5-18. They are highly interactive enrichment activities designed for students seeking to learn new information and explore interests. Youth gain independence and enjoy a positive introduction to the LLCC campus and college experience. Summer brings day camp opportunities throughout June and July. Topics range from technology, culinary, foreign language, arts, science and so much more. We offer classes in Springfield, Jacksonville and Taylorville. How can you help? Volunteers are always needed. Assistance is needed at the registration table. This consists of checking the children in each morning, handing out nametags and answering basic questions. We also need teacher aides or just a second pair of hands in classrooms and hall monitors. If you can spare a few hours each week, please contact us. This can be a learning and enjoyable experience for volunteers, too. Contact Jessica Ingold at [email protected] or 217-786-4905. Do you know of anyone interested in attending College for Kids? Have them visit our website http://www.llcc.edu/community-education/youth-programs/college-for-kids or call 786-2432 for more information. We have been voted one of the best summer day camps. Registration is now open. Jamie Stout, Director of Community Education 217.786.2430 [email protected]
