While overseas, I lived on the second floor of an older apartment building. The woman, who owned the building, lived in the apartment below mine. One evening I got distracted while I was running a bath. The sound of water got my attention. The bath which I had left unattended for quite a while was full, and water was pouring onto the floor. Soon after I had mopped up the water which must have been half an inch deep I heard a knock on the door. It was my elderly landlady, who wanted to know if there might be a leak in my apartment. I said my English was not very good, and I couldn’t understand what she was saying. This was a lie. She wanted to check for leaks in the bathroom. I happily let her do this, knowing the floors were dry and the mop was back in the closet. Puzzled, she left. I sighed with relief. Sometime later I learned that quite a lot of water had dripped down into the old woman’s apartment. It had seeped into a chest, that contained some of her prized possessions, and ruined many of them. Deeply embarrassed, I explained to the woman what had happened. I told her I wanted to pay for the damage which was all my fault. She refused my offer, saying insurance had paid for it. I bought her an expensive gift as an apology which she accepted, but I don’t think she ever trusted me after that.
