Social Studies Unit 4 Study Guide United States Citizens A citizen is a person who belongs to a country. There are two ways that people become a citizen of the United States. The first way is to be born in the U.S. The second way is naturalization. Rights and Responsibilities Rights are freedoms protected by laws. The right to vote means that people can choose their leaders. A responsible person is able to choose between right and wrong. A patriotic person shows respect and love for our country. A volunteer is a person who works for free to help people. Citizens Create Change George Washington was the first President of the United States. Sitting Bull was a Lakota Native American chief. Mary McLeod Bethune was a teacher. Cesar Chavez wrote speeches and held marches to change laws and help farm workers. Martin Luther King, Jr., believed that everyone should be treated equal. Rules and Laws Rules are important because they keep people safe. A government is all of the people who run a community, state, or country. Government services include schools, health programs, fire protection, and police protection. The Constitution is a plan for our government. It protects the rights of the people. A mayor leads our city. A governor leads our state. A president leads our country. Our president is named Barack Obama.

American Symbols A symbol is something that stands for something else. The Capitol building is where the people in the United States government write laws. The Supreme Court is where judges uphold laws. The Fourth of July is also known as Independence Day. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and freedom for people around the world.
