Social Studies Unit 1 Study Guide Maps A map is a drawing that shows where places are located. In our book, the neighborhood map shows Emilio and Lily how to get to the park. A physical map shows different land and water features such as mountains, rivers, and lakes. A political map shows borders of states, countries, and other areas. A globe is a round model of Earth. There are 5 oceans in the world. The top of Earth is called the North Pole and the bottom of Earth is called the South Pole. The Equator is an imaginary line that runs east and west around the middle of Earth. Parts of Maps A map key tells what the pictures on a map mean. A map scale tells how far apart places are on a map. A compass rose shows cardinal and intermediate directions on a map. A coordinate grid breaks a map into smaller sections. Be ready 
