Press Release For immediate release: April 24, 2017 Contact: Chris Hendrickson Grants Coordinator City of Sultan 360-793-1125 [email protected] WSDOT kicks off U.S. 2 repaving project between Sultan and Gold Bar The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has started an eight-mile resurfacing project that extends from milepost 21 just west of Fern Bluff Road in Sultan to 10th Street in Gold Bar. In addition to adding a layer of asphalt to repair cracked portions of roadway and fill potholes, the project includes upgrades to the pedestrian crossings to meet current federal standards. WSDOT contractor Lakeside Industries will begin pedestrian crossing upgrades on Monday, April 24, with paving and road repairs slated to begin the second week of May. “It has been about 15 years since this section of U.S. 2 was paved, and it shows,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Mark Sawyer in a news release. “We’re looking forward to getting rid of the cracks and potholes in the road, and drivers will like the smoother ride.” During construction, drivers should anticipate overnight, single-lane closures from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. The $4 million project is scheduled to be completed by October, 2017. According to WSDOT, approximately 18,000 vehicles use the U.S. 2 corridor every day. One of the primary objectives of the project is to enhance driver safety by eliminating places where water can pool and freeze. Additionally, the work is expected to extend the life of the roadway and reduce the potential for costly emergency maintenance repairs leading to unexpected closures.
