Tom Hurka University of Toronto "Permissions to Do Less Than the Best: The Moving Band"

This paper discusses permissions to produce outcomes that are less than the best impartially considered, because they involve your preferring either your own lesser to another's greater good or her lesser to your greater good. (The former are agentfavouring, the latter agent-sacrificing permissions.) It discusses the basis of these permissions and their strength compared both to each other and to various duties. The paper's main claim is that the permissions do not have the same extent in relation to all other people: if there's a band within which you're permitted to make either of two choices, the band moves.
