Newsletter of Green Point Christian College Mrs Debra Walls | Principal

For Unto Us Is Born A Saviour …

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive staff of the school community; Mr Matthew Drennan, Mr Peter McLellan, Mrs Jane McLarty and Mrs Margaret Johnston and also my Personal Assistant, Mrs Sue Parkinson. God has blessed each of you with unique gifts and abilities and it is my joy to work alongside you as we seek to fulfil the vision of Excellence in Christ Centred Education. Likewise, to the Board and the Church MAC Team, your efforts provide invaluable support for the extension of the Gospel message at the College. To all the staff that makes the College a light on a hill – thank you. Your dedication to God overflows as you share your gifts and abilities so freely with the students entrusted into your care. Martin Luther King Jr said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” We have at Green Point Christian College, an abundance of both light and love. We are building people for service at the College, people who will accept the challenge and become part of the great commission to, “...go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...” (Matthew 28:19) that they may know the truth of what God has done for them. God has intervened in our history and saved us for Himself, vividly demonstrating His love for us in His death on the Cross. The Christmas story is the prelude to that wondrous gift of salvation. A story of hope, rich in its telling, and touching our hearts in a way no other story ever has or will. Our world is filled with other narratives that also tell stories of hope with richness and diversity but they don’t take us beyond death – they leave us at the grave. The Christmas story of Jesus’ birth when Mary’s soul “glorified the Lord” (Luke 1:46) and Simeon proclaimed that “...my eyes have seen your salvation...” (Luke 2: 30-31), has caused us to be fit for eternity. Whatever your situation, God is always near at all times. May you not just feel God’s presence, but know it as the ultimate truth and your only hope in this world. That great statesman, Nelson Mandela, who passed away last week said: “I have walked a long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.” Blessings to you and your extended families this Christmas.

Week 10

Junior School News

I cannot believe that I am writing not only my last Messenger for 2013, but also my last Messenger as Head of Middle School. It has been an amazing year, full of opportunity and achievement. What a blessing it is to work in a school with such a terrific group of students and staff. I have enjoyed getting to know my enthusiastic and energetic Year 7 and have been astounded at the growth and maturity of my Year 8. It is a privilege being part of their lives each day. While “Middle School” will no longer exist, the aspects that have made it such a central part of a child’s schooling will still remain. The same dedicated staff, the same nurturing environment and the same opportunities to uncover and nourish each individual’s gifts will still be a vital part of Years 7 and 8. While my role will change in 2014, my love and support of all the students in Secondary School will not. My door will still be open, the kettle will always be on and the power of hot chocolate and marshmallows will live on! I wish all students and their families God’s richest blessings in the years ahead. Each one of you have made Middle School a richer place and I thank you for your care and love for each other, your energy and enthusiasm, and your desire to make a difference. I would like to wish all Middle School students and their families a blessed Christmas. I hope it is a time of refreshment and renewal for all. I pray that if you are travelling that God is with you and protects each of you. Lastly, I would like to thank the Middle School Staff, in particular the Home Teachers: Mrs De Witte, Mr Hook, Mr Haines, Mrs Stylianou, Mrs Freeman, Mrs Kratochvil, Mr Rosee and Mr Wellington. Each of you have sown into the lives of Middle School students and have added to the life of Middle School - thank you.

Week 10

Middle School News

I can hear the final bell approaching on another year at Green Point Christian College. Another year of life, excitement and learning is drawing to a close and quiet will be the main feature of the College. It is a time of peace and joy, a time of reflection and family, a time for recuperation and energy, but most of all a time to reflect on the most precious gift we were ever given. Have a marvellous and joyous Christmas. I pray it be full of peace and joy for you and your family.

I would like to thank all the Staff who have worked so diligently in Senior School this year. Thank you for all the effort and care you have put into the students. I wish to also thank the Faculty Co-ordinators, Year Advisers and anyone else doing extra roles in the College for your leadership and dedication in the carrying out of your roles over the past year. Thank you for your support and may you all have a refreshing break. Year 12, you will still need to spend time on your HSC work. You do need to get study and notes completed. You need to rest but not be complacent. Thank you to all parents - you have allowed us to teach your children over the past year. May you and your family have a safe holiday break and may your students come back refreshed and excited for another year at Green Point Christian College. 2 Corinthians 9:15 (KJV) “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”

Board of Studies - Year 10 Students Online On Wednesday, 11 December, all Year 10 students will be able to view and download their personal eRecord via Students Online. The eRecord will show their grades and, if they sat the Literacy and Numeracy tests, their test results. Year 10 students have received an email from the Board of Studies (BOS) advising them of this process. Year 10 students are encouraged to activate their Students Online account. Students Online provides students with regular and up-to-date information on their senior secondary study. As the current Year 10 cohort progresses through Years 11 and 12, it is important that they regularly engage with Students Online, and keep their email address updated.

A Word from Mr Brown...Skateboard Design Recently I have been experimenting with extension projects in my Industrial Technology and Design and Technology classes and skateboarding has been the name of the game. Year 11 students have been designing their own shapes and designs for their custom boards while I have taken them through the detailed process of vacuum forming for the desired concave on each deck. From DoubleKick Street Decks and old school Pool Decks to small Penny Boards and even Mal Skateboards - the workshop has been a busy place. While some boards have inlaid timber marquetry designs, others have dyed colours to achieve the perfect look. A competition has been running in the Library for the last two weeks asking for students to draw their favourite design for a custom skateboard and the winner was Cullen Hart from Year 6L. As a prize we donated a Mal Skateboard for Cullen to draw his design on and keep as his own. Thanks to all who drew some fantastic designs; Merry Christmas to all and I look forward to seeing you all next year with some inspiring project designs for the workshop.

Congratulations Nicola McDermott (Year 11) competed at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships over the weekend and won a Bronze Medal. This is a wonderful result and please congratulate her when you see her.

Uniform - Shoe Policy

Examples of Correct Shoes for K-12

Thank you for your ongoing support of Green Point Christian College. In order to meet the compliance requirements of Work Health and Safety Policies, the College has updated its Shoe Policy. It is expected that your next purchase of school shoes will meet the College policy requirements and that all students will be in the correct footwear. For all students in Years K - 12: A fully enclosed black polishable leather shoe (either lace up or velcro tab for Junior School). The shoe must have arch support and must not have a flat sole. It must also offer protection over the top of the foot and be fully enclosed. Also, sport shoes are vital for the health and development of growing feet in physical activities undertaken in Physical Education and Sport at Green Point Christian College. We require the wearing of well-fitting and supportive sport shoes that are of predominantly white or muted colour. This excludes Volley or Skate style shoes with a flat sole, in either canvas or leather as they do not give adequate support. Shoes that are made in excessively bright colours are also not acceptable. We have met with the following retailers and they will be able to assist you in purchasing school shoes that meet our policy requirements: •

Athlete’s Foot, Erina Fair

Shoe Warehouse, 20 Karalta Rd Erina (Offer 20% off RRP all year)

Mathers Shoes, Erina Fair

Myer, Erina Fair

Payless Shoes, Erina Fair

Some examples of these shoes have been provided to help you understand the style of shoe the College is requiring.

Acts 1:8 “…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.”

End of Year Scripture Assembly Gosford East Public School On Thursday of Week 8, some of our Year 10 Scripture Teachers were involved in running a Christmas Assembly for the children at Gosford East Public. Melissa Hain (pictured) wrote and delivered a very engaging and creative talk linking the birth and death of Jesus to the colours of candy cane. Ashleigh Cameron and Isabella Evans performed a funny drama about the angels called to announce the birth of Jesus. Hephzibah Crossing led the children in a song and Ben Everingham and Matthew Swaine also assisted. Thanks to Will Richards from Green Point Baptist and the students involved for ending the year on such a high note.

Missions and Service 2013 The past year has seen many students from the College involved in some form of outreach activity with the school, their local church and in other volunteer capacities. Developing an attitude of service and love are part of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The College hopes that our students are more and more outward looking as they grow in their understanding of the Gospel and seek to respond to the love that God has shown us in Christ. A sincere thank you to all the students, staff, parents and others who have upheld our students in prayer and helped them to step out in faith. You do not have to commit to a regular time slot in the week. Even if you can only help out for a few hours per term - it will be appreciated. You can even team up with a friend, or simply call Rae, our friendly canteen manager every now and then and find out if a suitable time slot is available. You can choose what you want to do - prepare food, sell at the window or help to clean up. All training (and lunch!) will be provided.
