Keith’s Korner J.B. Case was a tall, well-dressed man I remember from my childhood days at East

Flat Rock First Baptist Church. Despite his height, nice clothes and loving spirit, the one characteristic that stands out the most was his seemingly eternal supply of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum. Once, as a young boy, I was afforded the opportunity to visit in the home of this great gum supplier and was overwhelmed to see a large wooden trunk filled with an enormous stash of nothing else but Juicy Fruit gum. Oh, I haven’t mentioned that J.B. Case was the one faithful male presence in the nursery there at East Flat Rock. Yes, I was there in that church nursery most every Sunday and, year after year, I was involved in every age-appropriate ministry a little boy, and later a teen, could be involved in. Surely I was not given the gum as a baby, but I remember that stick of gum every Sunday during my preschool and elementary years. As I write this article I am grateful for the many “J.B. Cases” that have cared and invested in my life. The greater influence however, was that of my parents. Raised in a loving Christian home, it was easy for me to hear and respond to this great message of God’s love. In many ways, I can’t remember not believing, but as a nine-year-old I do remember a time when I spoke and prayed with my pastor and was compelled to make a public decision to follow Christ and be baptized. Throughout my teen years when I was navigating the halls of my public high school, another “J.B. Case” was urging me on along my Christian journey - it was now my youth minister, Ramon Smith. Many here at Boiling Springs Baptist met Ramon during our spring renewal services. He was a formative influence during my teen years and is still a strong and steady influence today. He loved what he did, as a youth minister, and served as a great mentor to me during these peculiar years of adolescence. He was there to encourage, guide and, at times, correct when needed. He didn’t hand out sticks of gum, but rather guidance, direction and leadership opportunities. I am grateful for those who influenced my coming to Christ and for the many “J.B. Cases” that continue to speak to my life today. No gum expected. This month I look forward to hearing testimonies from several in our church regarding who influenced them in their decision to follow Christ. ______________

A closer look at the life and ministry of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Beginning Wednesday, October 10, at 11:00 a.m. and 6:15 p.m., Pastor Keith will lead a 4-week video study and discussion on Bonhoeffer, which will last through the month. All are welcome! Other staff “Circles of Influence” are found on an insert in this newsletter.

Pray for our October services and join us on Sunday nights at 5PM, as we explore the topic, Circles of Influence in a deeper way. Evangelism discussion continues on Sunday evenings at 5PM in the Fellowship Hall. Each evening some introductory time will be spent reflecting on the mornings sermon and testimony theme (see Sunday's service schedule below). Following this discussion, Pastor Keith will share insights from the book, "Evangelism for Normal People" by John Bowen. These insights will also be shared conversationally in the hope that evangelism is, or at least can be, "normal" for all who consider themselves followers of Jesus. New books have arrived in the church library from Smyth & Helwys Publishers. In A Revolutionary Gospel, Walter Rauschenbusch, an early 20th century theologian, believed that Jesus’ teachings were, indeed, revolutionary and aimed to bring about not only moral transformation in individuals, but society as well. He preached and wrote of a social gospel. The idea of a Christianized society or country is put forth; could or should this be possible or desirable, and to what extent. Two books by Bert Montgomery, OF Mice and Ministers and Psychic Pancakes & Communion Pizza uses humor and insight to help Christians deal with contemporary issues. Mark Biddle, a Hebrew language scholar and one who has knowledge of ancient cultures, sees how humor was intentionally used in the Bible to teach biblical truths. His book, A Time to Laugh; Humor in the Bible, is both thoughtful and entertaining. Other new titles include: A Five Mile Walk; 365 Ways to Criticize the Preacher (written by a minister, humorous); The Potluck Dinner That Went Astray; Ambushed on the Road to Glory; Amidst Babel, Speak the Truth; A Christian’s Guide to Islam. Leaf through a few. You’ll be glad you did.

In one of the papers I had to write in seminary, I stated that quite honestly I had never really felt there was a time in my life that I was not a Christian and I continue to feel that way. So many people have quite dramatic conversion stories and specific places and/or persons to which they can point that made a difference in their decision to follow Jesus. It would be difficult for me to identify a specific time, place, or person that brought everything into focus so that I made a profession of faith. When I was younger I felt guilty that I could not identify a specific occasion or person with that influence; but, as I have grown older and deeper in the faith, I have realized what a blessing it was to have grown up in a Christian home and in a church community that showed me the love of Jesus at every opportunity. I walked the aisle at a very early age. My mother tells me that I had been talking about making a profession for some time. She said that she, my father, and the pastor thought that perhaps I was too young to make such a decision, that I didn’t realize what kind of commitment I would be making and they encouraged me to wait. Of course I didn’t know what it really meant or entailed! But does anyone at any age fully know? I tend to think not. What I am confident of is that I wanted to be like Jesus, to follow Jesus, and to share God’s love with others--as my family and church friends had done with me. I wanted to belong, to be a part of that awesome community. Eventually, the pastor and my parents relented because I would not quit talking about it. I remember the day I walked the aisle, the night I was baptized, partaking of the Lord’s Supper for the first time, and many of the people who loved and encouraged me all along the way. I suppose that most likely there are some names and/or faces I don't remember; but, I continue to thank God for the relationships that loved me into a lifetime of trying to follow Jesus and I seek to begin every day with a grateful heart. Candy Wilson

I was born into a family that was very involved in church life. We attended Bruington Memorial Baptist Church in Stanley, NC, which became FBC Stanley when the current building was completed in 1970. My father was the Minister of Music there from 1950 – 1964. He taught the young adult Sunday School class and was a deacon, and chair multiple times. Two of my uncles, and Linda’s father were usually chair when dad was not. My mother taught Sunday School, Training Union, GA’s, and sometimes kept the nursery. She told me that for one entire year, she was too busy to attend the morning worship services. I began to feel the call of God when I was six years old. I remember being in conference with Rev. Charles High and my parents, and hearing Charles say “Well, it sounds real to me.” I joined the church on a cold Sunday night early in 1967. Later, while I was in high school, I went down to the front of the church on a Sunday morning when the pastor asked if anyone felt called into the ministry. Four of the youth came forward. Of the four, one is Rev. Doug McClain, pastor of High Shoals Baptist. If I remember correctly, one was Sandy Ramsey Dwier (Teresa Heffelfinger’s sister) who played piano for FBC Stanley for 30+ years. One other has been in church work in music off and on ever since. I went on to play in Christian Rock bands until 1987 and took up the post of church organist in 1992. And, here I am. Roger Lowe

To be completely honest, it is hard for me to remember a time where Jesus was not a part of my life. I can certainly remember specific moments where the presence of Jesus became real, but mostly, I was born and raised by parents who believed in Jesus and taught me the importance of that belief. To some, this may seem like an unfair advantage. After all, everybody doesn’t get that experience. However, I often see times where growing up as a Christian almost makes it harder to be an authentic believer and follower of Jesus. Eventually, the faith of my parents could no longer carry me through my personal relationship with Jesus. I was influenced and encouraged by my family, ministers in the church, and my friends to find a personal relationship with Jesus that required a personal faith. A lot of times, especially in the United States, and even more so in the South, faith is inherited. While it is important to ‘raise a child up in the ways of the Lord,’ it is even more crucial that an individual who wants to truly be a follower of Jesus to make that decision based on their own faith, not the faith of their families. This encouragement from trusted friends, leaders and family is what helped guide me to make the personal decision to follow Jesus in my life. Alan Newcomb My family influenced me in my decision to follow Christ… my grandfather was a Baptist minister and he encouraged me to read the Bible early in my life. My parents raised me in a Christian home and took me to Sunday school. My teachers were great leaders, including Mrs. Dorothy Sue Hamrick, Mrs. Katy Ruth Dixon, and Mrs. Evelyn Allen to name a few. Time with my youth group and leaders helped shape how I believed and convinced me that I needed to live my life for Christ. Heidi Dobbins

When I was a young teen, I was invited to join the youth group of my best friend. I quickly knew I was in the right place, and with the help of the youth minister and the pastor of the church, I realized I wanted to have Jesus in my life. I was baptized, and since then, have had many hilltop and valley experiences. I know that throughout everything, good and notso-good, He always holds me and has enough mercy and grace to let me grow, experience life, and allows me to know that He is my Savior throughout it all. From the Evangelism Committee:

Sharing Our Faith Story The purpose of our evangelism emphasis this fall is to challenge our members to be more deliberate and faithful in sharing how they came to know Jesus as Savior, in order that unsaved people will accept Him as their Lord and Savior. Testimony outline: 1. What your life was like before you came to accept Jesus as Savior. 2. How you came to realize that you needed Jesus to save you from your sins. 3. Who, if anyone, helped you to open your heart to the Lord’s invitation to become His child? 4. What difference has it made in your life since you committed yourself to Jesus as Savior and Lord?

The beginning of our fall semester in our ministry to youth has been extremely encouraging and exciting. We have begun meeting on Mondays for Study Hall (now located in the Kerygma classroom) from 3-6 PM. Students are encouraged to drop in anytime and work on homework. If you are, or were, a teacher/expert on any school subject and you would be willing to come by to tutor for a short time during our Study Hall, please let us know if you are available. We would love to work that out with you. Our students have also been engaged in worship, Bible studies and a new addition, Life Groups, on Wednesday evenings. Our Life Groups are designed for our students and adults to grow together in a small group setting with each other and in our relationships with Christ. As a church we ask for your prayers, as there are high levels of energy and excitement in our ministry, that God will continue to be present and moving in our group and in our individual lives. As always, our youth ministry is aware of and grateful for the support of our church family. With love, Mary and Alan Newcomb

Preschool and Children... Three years ago, in October, we dreamed a dream together…to build a children and preschool ministry. The dream was to have a ministry that would be welcoming to young families with little children and to prepare our children to grow in Christ. Friday, as I held James David Webb, son of Justin and Stephanie Webb, less than 24 hours old, I thought about God’s gift to this family but also to this church…. we are building a dream. A dream that is growing with each new birth and each new family that reaches out for a place where their child/children can learn and feel God’s love. My grandmother once shared with me that it didn’t matter exactly where you worshipped but that you worshiped. She taught me how valuable the Lord’s Word was to her each day. Her spot was not only for a daily Bible reading but also the Lord’s Prayer. The message carried through generations, as the same book was always beside my mom. Growing up, church was not an option, but it didn’t need to be. We went to church because we wanted to be there, to worship, and to learn. I didn’t have Caswell but had many summers at a small church camp where we worshiped looking out on swamp trees. We knew the importance of trusting and listening to God’s Word. I think my mom and my grandmother would twinkle now and say that God’s love has brought me where I need to be right now! Share what you love with others. Share that love freely and don’t hide your love and your gifts given by God. We need to be doing that too! Sharing our love and our gifts with our families and especially with our children and little ones. They may not understand but they can see our faces and hear the simple stories and know that God is with them. Look at your gifts. They may be as simple as rocking a toddler on Sunday morning or Wednesday night, or helping the RA’s begin the new year. Whatever they are, share your gifts! Your impact may make that difference. Someone made that difference for you! Fall will quickly be upon us and we have several fun activities coming up for our pre-K, children, and families to enjoy. On October 27, we are going to have a Pumpkin Palooza, for all children to come and decorate a pumpkin, do Halloween activities, and enjoy snacks. October 31, Halloween night, we will have Shine Your Light for Jesus Fall Festival with pizza for the children and additional food options for adults, games, and crafts. At the end of the evening we will have a Trunk or Treat. Dress up in your best non-scary costume and come and have fun and fellowship with our friends and family. Bring a friend and enjoy a safe evening. Dream…. hold a newborn baby and feel the warmth and love that God shares and gives to us. Go back in time, maybe just a day, and think of someone who impacted your faith. Quietly say thank you. Thank you, Boiling Springs Baptist for giving me the opportunity to hug and love on all our children!
