Keith’s Korner... We get the term “boot camp” from the military, but we can encounter boot camps in various areas of life: exercise, a period of intense training before a new job, or some retreat for personal or marital transformation. The purpose for any boot camp would be to push someone beyond what they think are their limits. On March 5, I will begin a new sermon series that will lead us through the Lenten season called Boot Camp for Renewal (W ant to kn o w m o r e abo u t Le n t? See below ). This ser ies w ill be one that challenges us to make necessary changes in our life, hard as they may be, that will lead us to repentance and spiritual renewal. This last month we have been reminded of God’s great love and we were challenged to share and show this love with others through our 28 Days of Love emphasis. It has been so encouraging to see and hear testimony, from individuals and groups, about the many ways this emphasis has played itself out in the community. Planning and leading worship services centered around the theme of God’s love was both enjoyable and refreshing. As we move through these 40 days of Lent, our focus remains on God’s love, but we will be challenged to do some personal investigation and spiritual inventory. This new series, Boot Camp for Renewal, w ill challen ge each o f u s to r epen t, change cou r se an d r e -focus our lives to be more in line with Jesus. We can all get caught up in the drama of life and lose our sense of purpose or direction at times. This emphasis on the hard work of spiritual renewal can lead us to greater peace and purpose and challenge us to leave old habits, prejudices and weaknesses behind. Will you join with me and ask God to begin a work of renewal in each of our hearts, a renewal that will lead us all to look more like Christ? You are loved, Keith

“Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38)

What is Lent? Len t is a seaso n o f fo r ty days, no t cou n tin g Sun days, w hich begin s on Ash Wednesday (March 1) and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of selfexamination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. Summary provided by United Methodist Communications

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Psalm 51:10-12 (NLT)

From our Associate Pastor for Music & Adults… Candy Wilson Dear Friends, As I write this article I am preparing for and looking forward to tomorrow's session of the ChurchWorks workshop I am attending. We had a session earlier today which was an encouraging and helpful session regarding fulfillment and satisfaction in ministry. Several things were mentioned that are thought to contribute to this. (This presentation was the result of some studies that have actually been done regarding this topic.) Some of the top things mentioned were various relationships--those relationships considered to be most important were (1) relationship with one's spouse and (2) one's relationship with the local church. The type of relationship a minister has with his or her local church is something that has been studied and concluded to be crucial to contributing to a minister's sense of fulfillment (or lack there of) in ministry. That discussion caused me to think more about my relationship with Boiling Springs Baptist. Because of all of you and your generous hospitality to me and your loving and caring welcome that I have experienced in my short time here, I think we're off to a pretty good start! I covet your prayers and support as I continue to strive to learn more about who you are and as I try to find my way into doing more effective ministry in your midst. Thank you for the privilege and opportunity to serve alongside you in doing the ministry to which we have been called by an all-loving God who challenges us to "draw the circle wide" and wider still as we reach out to those in need of God's love and care. In service with you, Candy

Preschool and Children... “A happy heart makes a face look cheerful.” Proverbs 15:13 Are you wearing your happy smile today? A smile on the outside means you are happy on the inside. God gave us many reasons to be happy. He loves us. He cares for us. He is our friend. God can help us be happy inside and out. In watching the little children play Saturday, I saw God’s love bursting out everywhere! Children’s love of life is unending and they love everyone who “loves on” them. God through them gives us a reason to be happy. Our love this month has been much like that as we shared in the “28 Days of Love” with those in our community and around the town. We have heard people say to us, “My day went from horrible to awesome. Thank you for sharing and for caring!” Many of us have been blessed and as the children will tell you God is Love and God loves Us. Let’s not let it stop with February. Let’s continue to share with others our faith and love for each other and the church. Spring is quickly approaching and plans are already being made for summer. I welcome your suggestions for children’s activities. The Children’s Ministry is always seeking volunteers who are willing to give their time and energy to help with the children’s program. Children’s events on the calendar are as follows: Children Activity Day March 31, Glow in the Dark for children grades 1-6, April 7, and the Easter Egg Hunt for Pre-K children, April 8. Planning is also underway for our Music, Art, and Drama (MAD) Camp which will be August 7-10. The camp is for children in grades 1 to 6. Vacation Bible School is the week of June 11 to 15. I hope you will put these dates as well as all the others on your calendar. Thank you for all your support. A Message from Our Youth Minister... The month of February truly has been an incredible month in the life of our church and in our community of Boiling Springs. The church-wide 28 days of love challenge has brought inspiring words, messages and actions to a wide variety of people. Throughout the month of February, our youth Wednesday night Bible studies were focused on the topic of love. We looked at four important aspects of love that affect our relationship with God and others; God’s love for each of us, our love for God, our love for ourselves, which ultimately leads to loving others. Through these four weeks our youth have been challenged to live a life full of love. An important message for our youth and for our congregation as a whole as we move into the month of March is to make sure that our days of love for God and others do not end on February 28. I reference this often but Jesus says in John 13:35, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” In order for Boiling Springs Baptist Youth and Boiling Springs Baptist Church to continue to make a difference in our community and in our world, we all must continue to love all others in the name of Jesus our Lord, in the month of March and far beyond. Just a reminder of our weekly schedule and some other important notes: Weekly Schedule: Our regularly scheduled meetings will continue in March. Our youth meet on Sunday morning for Sunday school in the youth room at 9:45 AM, we meet on Sunday evenings in the youth room from 6-8 PM for Bible study, we meet on Wednesday nights in the LEC at 5:30 PM-7 PM, and we also meet every Thursday morning before school at Bojangles in Boiling Springs at 6:45 AM. My challenge for each youth in the month of March is to come to a meeting that maybe they haven’t been to before or don’t come to weekly. We would love to see all of our youth this month! Youth Softball: We had a great time last season playing youth softball and we are doing it again starting with practice in March and games towards the end of April. It is co-ed so all girls and boys are welcome to play with us. I will pass around a sign-up sheet to the youth and then place it on the bulletin board outside of my office for youth to sign-up. We would love support from church members for our youth playing softball! Camp Caswell: Our youth will be attending Camp Caswell this summer on July 17-22. There is currently a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside of my office for youth to sign-up. If you are interested in going as a chaperone, please let me know and we will be happy to talk with you about this. Please be in prayer for our youth and adults as we begin to prepare for our summer camp. May God continue to bless our church and use each of us as God’s vessels in our community and our world. Alan and Mary Newcomb 2017 Spring Chatauqua JAMES, BROTHER OF JESUS The Story of the Church’s Forgotten Founder, AD 33-62 Taught by DR. For almost 30 years, James shaped the nature and life of the original Church in Jerusalem. This class is about who he was and how and why he did that. The classes will meet in the fellowship hall for five sessions at 5p.m. Following are topics and dates, March 5—The Mysterious Appearance of James March 12—The Dangerous 30 Years After Pentecost March 19—no class March 26—James and His Former Enemy: Paul April 2—The Church’s Crisis that James Negotiated April 9—The Letter and Enduring Legacy of James

The BSBC Library has a number of Accelerated Readers from which elementary and middle school students may select a book. The AR program assists students to select books to read on the independent or instructional levels increasing student comprehension. Education research has clearly shown that a student who reads at least 15-20 minutes daily is certain to make great gains in reading comprehension. AR is a part of the grade a student earns each grading period and is noted on the report card. Further, End-of-Grade scores reflect how much a student spent reading. Note the Church Library is open each weekday and on Sunday. Take advantage of the opportunity to read for maximum enjoyment and achievement. Check it out! Ruth Pace

28 DAYS OF LOVE FROM BOILING SPRINGS BAPTIST SUPERHEROES Do you know any Superheroes? Of course, we all do. This is the theme of the Cleveland County Relay for Life this year. Soon it will be time for our luminary service here at BSBC to honor and remember cancer survivors. Put May 7 on your calendar for this special time. If you would like to honor your superhero there will be forms outside the church office, or see Diane Rabon. For a $10 donation we will use the luminaries here at BSBC and then again at the fairgrounds on May 19, 2017. Also, a poster will be in the office hallway where you can write the name of your cancer superhero. CELEBRATE! REMEMBER! FIGHT BACK!
