Motivational Interviewing Workshop: Foundation Skills Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative method for guiding conversations to address the common problem of ambivalence about change. More than a set of techniques, MI is a discipline in its own right. It is designed to strengthen an individual's motivation for and movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. In this intensive two-day skill-building workshop participants will be provided with an interactive, experiential learning approach to develop their MI skills. The workshop will include live demonstration, video demonstration, “real plays” and practice in small group exercises with coaching and feedback (during and after exercises). Participants will be asked to engage in an online (40-60mins) training and pre-reading in preparation for the workshop. The two-day workshop will offer an opportunity to: •

Gain a clear understanding of MI – what it is, and how it works

Practice the core skills of MI, with an emphasis on reflective listening

Increase ability to work effectively with resistance and ambivalence

Practice skills in softening sustain talk and cultivating change talk

Develop strategies to continue learning and practicing MI

Learning Motivational Interviewing (MI) involves more than just a one or two day training. This workshop is designed to support individuals on this journey.* The workshop is suitable for workers dealing with a wide range of presenting issues including addictions, chronic disease management, treatment engagement and adherence, criminal justice and health behaviour change. Workshop Facilitator: Dr Eileen Britt is a Clinical Psychologists and member of the NZ Psychological Society. She is also a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international collective of MI trainers and researchers who promote excellence in the practice and training of MI. She has a long-standing interest in MI research, implementation, training and practice. Eileen teaches MI at the University of Canterbury on the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology programme, as well two postgraduate papers on MI within the School of Health Sciences, and has experience in providing MI training to a range of different professional groups such as, physiotherapists, dietitians, nurses, social workers, probation workers and psychologists.

*Note: There will be a 1-day Intermediate MI workshop (a follow-on from the foundation skills workshop) in Christchurch on September 22 facilitated by Eileen Britt which is being organised by the Canterbury Branch of the NZ College of Clinical Psychologists.
