SWEATER WEATHER

O

ith the cooler weather approaching, we ask that you please cooperate with our uniform policy regarding sweatshirts and sweaters. CHILDREN MAY WEAR ONLY SOLID NAVY, HUNTER GREEN OR WHITE SWEATERS OR SWEATSHIRTS (NO HOODS) WHILE IN SCHOOL. We appreciate your full cooperation in conforming with our policies. Please be sure to label your children’s sweaters.

ur Midos program, Konei Olam, is off to a great start! Over the course of the program, we will be traveling the world with Yoni and learning all about different Midos. We will be spending a month in each country and focusing on a specific Midah. Each week, we will tune in to one aspect of that month’s Middah. This week, the students were welcomed to France with a stamp in their passports - the first stop on their world tour. In France, the students will be learning the importance of Zrizus. This week, we learned about the importance of waking up and immediately saying Modeh Ani. (Thank you to the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation for introducing this program to us) Mrs. Palgon’s fifth grade girls welcomed visitors to their classroom with a hearty “bienvenue”, complete with authentic French berets!

CARPOOL SAFETY

P

arents are reminded to keep their children safe by: 1. Never let a child in or out of the car on the street side of the car. 2. For AM dropoff - Never drop off your children on a grassy area(north of our rolling gate) - if so, they’ll need to cross the active driveway into our parking lot - which is extremely dangerous. 3. When dropping middle school students - do not stop near the rolling gate - you must move up the line as directed by our security guard. Stopping at that spot causes a back up- & then problem number 2 occurs! Thank you for your cooperation.

GENERAL MILLS BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION

W

e would appreciate it if you send in all boxtops you have collected to date to the office by Monday, October 25 so that we can redeem as many as possible by the October 30 deadline. Collect and save all of the boxtops and send them in to school with your children. Please bear in mind, the more we collect, the more we are able to do for our school! Grandparents and neighbors love to help collect…don’t forget to remind them as well. The Boxtops for Education project is ongoing, so please keep collecting after the October 30 deadline. We can continue to benefit throughout the year.

Erev Shabbos Parashas Lech-Lecha 5771 Dear Parents, The Torah relates in this week’s Parsha, a surprising and challenging aspect of the human condition that affects even great people, and certainly children. In describing Avram’s preparations for the military rescue he was undertaking to save his nephew Lot from the 4 kings, the Torah states: …VaYorek Es Chanichov. (14:14) The Gemara in Nedarim (32a) teaches us that the unusual word VaYorek refers to Avram providing gold and precious jewels to his disciples, who were his soldiers for this mission. Tosfos (Chulin 47b) explains he did this so that they would not stop to take from the spoils of war but would remain focused on their mission of saving Lot. My Rebbe, HaGaon, HaRav Alter Chanoch Henach Leibowitz, zt’l, pointed out that it seems clear that had Avram not done this, his students would have stopped in the middle of the military campaign, neglected Lot, possibly causing his death, and satisfied their own desires. He further pointed out that these soldiers were very great men, tzaddikim, who demonstrated their high level of bitachon (trust in Hashem) by pursuing this venture – such people would be sidetracked by the glitter of gold?! We learn a valuable insight into the frailty of even the greatest of humans. Even in the midst of a life and death mission, pursuing the loftiest of goals, we have a tendency to get distracted by the here and now, what’s actually going on around us, and we can easily lose sight of our goal and purpose. A common example is when we are very dedicated to a vital cause on behalf of the community, but along the way we could easily get involved in petty squabbles and power struggles with fellow volunteers and activists. If this is true of adults and even Tzaddikim, how much more so is it true of children. Children live very much in the here and now. If they want something and are denied it, they don’t see the large picture. They don’t see that, for example, an average of 7 out 10 requests of theirs are granted. They don’t take the broad view that you win some and lose some. Rather, they see their entire universe revolving about whether they can stay up an extra 15 minutes, because if not, life is basically not worth living. This focus on the here and now also presents as a high level of distractibility that is a predominant, and sometimes frustrating, feature of children. When your child ignores or refuses a request or instruction, don’t be so quick to judge it as rebelliousness or a personal attack – most likely your child just got distracted and isn’t thinking about what you asked from them (20 seconds ago!). We must be extremely careful to try and understand why our children may act so much at variance with what we know - they know - to be the right thing. They’re not trying to misbehave, to give us a hard time or to be naughty. Right now they are simply not thinking about what it is we wanted them to do. Our reaction therefore needs to be to keep calm, understand the dynamics behind their behavior and gently but firmly guide them to remain focused on whatever their responsibility is. Getting upset only confuses and frightens them and is not the Chinuch that they need and sincerely desire. Repeating your request more than three times is certainly not effective or helpful. However, timely questions – such as “what are we supposed to be doing now?” or “is this play time or homework time?” can be precisely the guidance your child needs. Best wishes for a wonderful Shabbos, Rabbi Kalman Baumann Principal

Now that we have returned from the Yomim Tovim, the TEAM library is “open for business!” Students may now borrow books from the library. The maximum number of books a child may borrow correlates with their grade level. First grade – one book, Second Grade- two books, Third Grade- 3 books, and so on. Students may borrow the book for one week, returning it on their scheduled library day. So you may assist your children in bringing their books back on time, you will find a library schedule below. Students who have not returned their books are not permitted to take out others. This can be very disappointing for the children, so please help them be responsible library patrons. Please help your chld(ren) understand that they may not lend their books to a friend because they are responsible for the book. There is no charge or fee for using the TEAM library. However, if a book is lost or damaged, the replacement cost of the book must be remitted. To help prevent loss and damage, the following suggestions are made. 1.

Keep all school library books in one location. It is often reported that the housekeeper put the book “somewhere.” I tell the children that the book is their responsibility and they must know where it is at all times. I recommend that the library books be kept in the child’s back pack. This way, the child always has the book whether in school or at home.

2. To protect the books from damage, please be sure that water bottles are in plastic bags if they are sharing the same space in the backpack with the library books. Many of the backpacks will have outside pockets that will accommodate a water bottle. 3. Keep books away from baby siblings. We all know they like to explore with their mouths and hands. Yum! Yum!
