Enhancing competence in supervision: Essential elements of effective practice presented by:

INSTITUTE of CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Fiona Howard Nelson 11 September; Wellington 26 September 2017, 9.00am - 4.30pm

Professional supervision is an important part of developing and maintaining professional competence. At its best, supervision enables us to critically examine and reflect on our work and expand our awareness of values, assumptions, and emotions that may subtly affect our work. Its effective practice involves several specific competencies that are distinct from other forms of psychological or therapeutic practice that are now recognised both here and internationally. These include specific skills, knowledge and awareness in cultural, administrative, educational, ethical and interpersonal domains. The need to practice supervision competently is highlighted in the current political and economic climate within which many of us work where the focus is often on our efficiency and accountability. Time pressure for example, can influence how the supervision hour is facilitated and the depth to which discussion can go. How do we best manage supervision within this context and what are the important elements that make it effective? What is the supervisor’s role in the CCP process? How can cultural competence be addressed and in what forums? This workshop is an introduction to the key educational and developmental elements of supervision practice that maintains the focus upon the supervisee’s learning and well-being. This includes the development of the supervisees learning objectives and continuing competence plan, engaging in critical reflection and evaluation of practice. A strong relational approach where issues of power and cultural diversity will be presented as foundational for optimizing the effectiveness of supervision and acknowledgement of the Treaty of Waitangi. This workshop is interactive and there will be sections where an approach will be practiced using the participants own case examples for supervision. The objectives are to assist participants to: • Gain an update on the most recent evidence base and best practice guidelines for supervision • Develop knowledge about the ethics of supervision practice • Understand the process of negotiating a safe and

trusting working alliance • Respond appropriately to cultural diversity and relational dynamics within the supervisory relationship • Understand the process of negotiating supervision agreements and • the structure of supervision sessions • Develop skills in the use of experiential learning • Facilitate the development of supervisees’ professional development goals and reflective review of practice for their CCP • Develop a continuing competence plan for one’s own supervision practice The content will be appropriate to both supervisors and supervisees who engage in supervision in the education, health, social or correctional services. This includes those of all levels of supervision experience, from recently qualified to experienced practitioners. The programme will focus on both supervision of trainees and peer consultancy, identifying their differences and similarities.
