Kim Oliver has a cat. The cat’s name is Sam. The Olivers have birds. Sam has hurt a number of birds. He runs and jumps at the birds. The birds get going. They fly to their nests. “Do not hurt the birds, Sam,” yells Kim. “A cat is a cat, Kim” says Fran Hill. “They hurt birds.” © Literacy Council of Montgomery County, MD., Inc., Revised 2012
Fran tells Kim to get a bell. She tells Kim to put the bell on Sam. “Put the bell on his neck,” says Fran. “Sam will not hurt the birds. The bell will tell the birds to fly. They will fly to their nests.”

Kim runs to the pet shop. She gets a bell for Sam. The girls put the bell on Sam’s neck. Fran and Kim look at Sam. Sam looks at the birds. He runs and jumps at the birds. The bell tells the birds to fly. They fly to their nests. They are not hurt. “The birds thank you, Kim,” says Fran. “Sam is not going to thank you!”
