ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, the institute was accorded a deemed university status in recognition of its academic excellence by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in June 2001. VIT University has made a mark in the field of higher education in India by imparting quality education in a cross cultural ambience combined with extensive application oriented research. VIT University ranked No.1 Private Engineering Institution by MHRD, Govt. of India (NIRF-2016 ranking). The campus has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with students from all corners of the globe. The global standards set at VIT spur us on in our relentless pursuit of excellence in the field of education and research. The campus spread with greenery and sylvan surroundings away from the crowded city. ABOUT CO2 RESEARCH AND GREEN TECHNOLOGIES CENTRE & SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CO2 Research and Green Technologies Centre (CO2RGTC), a unique advanced research laboratory, was created by VIT University, Vellore to carry out research and develop technologies for Carbon Capturing and Utilization (CCU), to develop sustainable and green energy technologies and plan for projects on energy, water conservation, waste management and heat recovery. The centre was inaugurated on 15th February 2010 by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Honorable Minister for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Govt. of India. The research centre consists of Solar concentrating collectors, trigeneration plant, Kalina cycle system, solar desalination, solar cooling, solar thermal power generation, cooling cogeneration, solar tracking devices, solar Stirling engine, solar dryer, solar lighting, solar PV power plant, fuel cell setup, 100 kW biomass power plant using gasifier, biogas power plant, pyrolysis plant, bio energy technologies etc. The School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC), one of the eleven constituent Schools of VIT, consists of the oldest and best performing departments of VIT. The School has got well qualified and experienced faculty members with Ph.D. from reputed institutes like IITs and IISc. Faculty members are actively involved in executing a number of R & D and consultancy projects for Government agencies like Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources (MNRE), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and also many reputed industries. The school offers B.Tech. M.Tech., M.Tech. (by Research) and Ph.D. programmes. B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering programmes are accredited by ABET (USA).

OBJECTIVE OF THE WORKSHOP The current solar energy collection is very low efficient due to heavy heat transfer losses. There is a challenge to improve the current status by new techniques and devices. There are wide applications of solar thermal engineering i.e. power generation, desalination, process heating, cooling, cogeneration, trigeneration, polygeneration etc. Developing a suitable energy conversion configurations/products meet the human needs at domestic, industrial and commercial levels. This workshop trains all the participants in solar energy collection, store and usage. The workshop is focused on modern solar thermal collectors, tracking improvements, storage techniques, thermal conversion applications such as improved heat recovery, power generation, desalination, solar assisted hybrid plants, cogeneration, multi-utility product etc. Essentially, this workshop will provide the opportunity to flourish the knowledge and help the participants to pursue research successfully in these areas. 1. 2. 3.
