The Endeavor»» The SNCAE Executive Team members were delighted to be welcomed to the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Gala, held Friday, January 11, 2013, at the McKimmon Center. Students were invited by Dr. Bettye Brown, of NCAE’s Membership and Organizing team, and helped usher dignitaries and esteemed guests. The event was entitled: “Living the Dream in a Whole New World.” The highlight of the evening came with a speech by Dr. Cornel West, and Tavis Smiley, who have both a public radio and television show. They’re a team whose primary goal is to bring new light to the growing problem of poverty, in America, and become agents of change. Dr. West spoke passionately about poverty in America, and let the audience know that poverty touches every people in America; poverty is very real, in AfricanAmerican homes, Caucasian homes, Hispanic homes, Native American homes, and Asian-American homes. The entire audience was moved, multiple times, by Dr. West and Mr. Smiley, even coming to their feet for multiple standing ovations! SNCAE Executive Team thanks Dr. Brown and Elic Senter, State Organizer, SNCAE for the opportunity to attend.

Membership is Marvelous! Membership in SNCAE is much, much more than simply liability insurance. The organization has SO much to offer students. First, students have access to the latest educational research on issues that matter the most to teachers. For instance, this past November, student leaders attended a national conference held to gain insight into bullying. NEA Student Program members from all over the U.S. traveled to this wonderful, information-packed event. The information gained while there was fresh and practical. Students were given actual tools to use in their classrooms, such as lesson plans, videos, speakers, and much more. Because of this conference, K-12 students, pre-service teachers and current teachers benefit. Further, SNCAE enables students to create lasting friendships and make collegial connections for career opportunities. Exercise your rights as a member; take advantage of a workshop, conference, or write a grant…you could even run for one of the Executive Committee positions at Spring Conference!

Year, at SNCAE! Our great organization is a part of real community service with the Outreach to Teach project. Additionally, SNCAE and the Student Advisory Committee are coordinating Regional Professional Days, and diligently planning the upcoming and EXCITING 2013 SNCAE Spring Conference! The student organization really CAN make a difference. Finally, our membership numbers are climbing steadily, and we suspect that trend to hold true throughout Spring semester. Remember to check your calendar for a date which you, or one of your chapter’s members, can attend one of the Regional Professional Days. I look forward to seeing you there!

The DPB team has begun producing a video series entitled: Educator Voices, which highlights one North Carolina teacher and his or her personal story with each new video. This new series is being broadcast on YouTube, and will be forwarded to various N.C. lawmakers, who already subscribe to the DPB. This is an innovative method to share educators’ personal stories with the people in Raleigh, who write the budgets for N.C. public education. The Endeavor proudly salutes the Daily Political Briefing for choosing an effective medium to share the stories of our teachers. Chapters’ Colloquial Cove Saying NO to Bullying By: Hannah Elise Thornton, SNCAE, Meredith College

Elic Senter, with the NCAE Center for Instructional Advocacy, utilized his experience and his knowledge to provide a serious and funny workshop about bullying for our SNCAE chapter. Freshman Tyler Miller commented that her favorite part was “learning about others’ experiences with bullying” because it made the workshop personal. Senior Amber Lindsey and senior Morgan Johnson valued Mr. Senter’s teaching experiences as they provided examples for the audience. Johnson remarked, “His enthusiasm, honesty, and personal anecdotes made the presentation much more meaningful.” One of the most meaningful parts of the workshop was the beginning when attendees shared their own challenges and obstacles with past bullying. Not only did the workshop address the emotions and then the statistics of these experiences, but also the audience gained valuable information on how teachers can impact a classroom by stopping bullying the moment it occurs, and by establishing an atmosphere and environment that has no tolerance for discrimination and bullying. Sometimes certain classes need an entire lesson to explain the importance of the issue. There are myriad aspects of bullying that many children do not know, and some that even the attendees do not know. Freshman Jeminishia Williams later stated that she had always thought kids responded to bullying the same way, but that this workshop showed that kids have different levels and variations of behavior for different grade levels. Junior Katie Riggs remarked that her interest was sparked when she learned that “bullies typically have high self-esteem, while their victims often have low self-esteem,” as many times people are told that someone who bullies just feels bad about himself or herself. Ultimately, the role of the educator is not just that of a teacher. Instead, an educator is also a friend, psychologist, nurse, moderator, and an advocate. Teachers must take almost every role as they help prepare students for the world outside of school. If bullying or discrimination enters our classroom, we will now know what to do.
