Hello All! I hope that everyone has gotten off to a great school year, I know I have! For those of you who missed the Fall Leadership Conference you truly missed a great event, but don't worry, there are always Regional Professional Learning Days and Spring Conference! Many of our chapters across the state are doing lots of great things. Each month, here in the President's Corner, I will highlight a chapter whose members were engaged in community and/or campus events. This month my Spotlight Chapter is North Carolina Central University (NCCU)! Last month, the NCCU chapter participated in the "Fill My Backpack 5K Run/ Walk" hosted by the School 0f Education on their campus. This event was held to support the InterFaith Food Shuttle and their Backpack Buddies Program which helps children of low income families with weekend meals. SNCAE members at NCCU assisted with handing out prizes, making posters, ran the cheering stations, and some even participated in the run! Great job engaging members on campus and in the community, NCCU! Keep up the good work! If your chapter hosts or helps with an event on campus or in the community, submit that information to your regional representative or myself and we will select a campus to "Spotlight"! Together in education,

Cathy Barnes 800-662-7924, x227 [email protected]

Fall into Action... Grow Your Membership! By: Runda Alamour The leaves are starting to change color, the air is getting cooler, and pumpkin spice lattes are steaming up the windows of a coffee shop near you. It can only mean one thing...the start of the SNCAE membership season! Oh, and fall is here! These first few months are crucial to gaining and retaining membership and my job is to help you make the most of it. Every month, look for my article here in The Endeavor to learn all about how to grow membership in your chapter. Check out these five ideas below to get your campus talking about SNCAE: Hold an Interest Meeting: Even if students on your campus have heard of SNCAE they may not know what it is or how to join. Holding an interest meeting early in the semester is a great way to meet fellow education students, talk about the organization, and gain new members. Make sure to go out of your way to get in touch with freshman students, they may not have the same access to information avenues as upperclassmen! Social Media Presence: Colle ge students love technology and you should too! Don’t forget to pass along information about SNCAE and upcoming events on mediums such as Facebook and Twitter. Our executive team also has a Facebook page. Follow us at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Student-NorthCarolina-Association-of-Educators-SNCAE/173423225844 .

Create a Bulletin Board: Ask the p r ofessor s in your education department if you can have an SNCAE bulletin board for your chapter. A bulletin board is an excellent way to pass out brochures and let your campus know about upcoming events and meetings. Changing the bulletin board theme often can also be a good way for members to bond and be creative (P.S. it also gets you bonus points towards chapter awards)! Presenting Classrooms: Many pr o fessor s ar e more than happy to let members take a few minutes of their class time to talk to students about SNCAE. Find out which professors are willing to let your chapter come and speak (and pass out some of the brochures and goodies Elic sent to your chapter). I also created a Prezi to help with these presentations (and interest meetings), check out the link to my DropBox account below to get access. Word of Mouth: W or d of m outh is often th e best way to interest people in SNCAE. Talk to students and faculty about all of the wonderful things you are doing in the organization and invite them to a chapter event. Students will be tempted to join and professors will pass on the information to their classes! To access the Prezi presentation on Growing Membership, and other resources go to https://www.dropbox.com/sh/094gbiq9wflk16 a/xdca-4hgFL . Please feel free to email me with membership questions at [email protected] . Good luck and happy fall!

National Bullying Prevention Month October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Several resources can be found on our bully-free campaign page. You can also read and share stories from NEAToday about workplace bullying, cliques and long-term impacts of bullying. Also, please use social media to amplify the message and encourage members and activists to take the bully-free pledge. Hashtags:

Bullying in our schools is at a tipping point, and while 48 states have passed bullying prevention laws it’s more important than ever that educators take a stand, and take action to prevent bullying. Our students need more caring adults in their lives. Our members—teachers and education support professionals—are primed to take a stand against bullying in schools. Educators are taking the pledge to put an end to bullying: www.nea.org/bullyfree.

FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERNCE To kick off the year right we had our Fall Leadership Conference on September 21,2013 on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. The FLC provided a training and information for the leaders from each SNCAE campus chapter. Some of the sessions that were presented at the FLC were the Role Alike Session and concurrent session. The role alike session gave campus leaders a better understanding of what their role includes and how to perform that role correctly. In the concurrent session campus leaders learn how to draw more members to SNCAE and how to keep these members engaged.
