President’s Corner Hello all! I hope that you all have had great Spring Breaks! As we begin the second half of the semester I am elated that we have come to this part of the year. This part of the year is my favorite, as we host our Spring Conference in Raleigh! It is my hope that I see many of you at the conference. At the conference, you will be able to meet with other members from all over the state. Likewise, I hope that many of you are running for state offices; these are great opportunities to learn and grow as future education professionals. While holding a state office is a great experience, it is one that requires a ton of hard work, time, and commitment, so please consider those things as you are thinking about running! Also, we are hosting our Outreach to Teach event on April 5th in Guilford County. For this project, we will all meet in High Point, NC and makeover the teacher's lounge and media center of a school. The school has not yet been notified, so I can't tell you what school we will be making over; as soon as I am able, I will let you know! It is my hope that we have as many chapter represented from all across the state. This is a huge event and we will need as many volunteers to help us as possible! As always, thanks for all of the great work that you all continue to do for SNCAE! It is because of you that our organization is growing everyday! Jaalil Hart

Membership Corner Hello Members! I have an exciting announcement for those who haven't heard! SNCAE will be holding our very own Outreach to Teach project on April 5th. Outreach to Teach began when "a group of 35 civic-minded Student NEA leaders attending the 1996 National Education Association Student Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Ga., started a beautification project by repairing a local school. Since then, during the week preceding the NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly, NEA Student Program members, with support from NEA Retired Conference attendees and other NEA members, have volunteered at schools in need of rehabilitation". This year, we have decided to do our own state-sponsored project in Guilford County, but we need your help to make it a success! First, we need volunteers on April 5th. Ask your fellow SNCAE members to carpool to the school site (to be announced soon), it's a great way to have fun and bond with other members. Second, we need donations in order to have a greater effect! This means our chapters should hold fundraisers and ask for donations to help out this school. Consider having a bake sale and donate the proceeds to the project. Another great way to raise money is to ask friends, family, and the social media world for donations. I have set up a GoFundMe website, which safely accepts donations, at this address: http://www.gofundme.com/7dll1g. We have raised $305 in the first six days of it being up and I know we can do MUCH more. You can also check out our Facebook page for the event at: www.facebook.com/sncaeoutreachtoteach14. If you need specific help in creating a successful fundraiser, please email me at [email protected]. Let's make this project awesome!

REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT Northeastern Region

Southeastern Region

Greetings! The time has come and it is sad to say that this will be my last post as your SNCAE Northeast Regional Representative. I look forward to seeing students from Chowan, East Carolina, Elizabeth City State, Barton, and Wesleyan at the Spring Conference on March 28-29. I hope that your chapter had a successful year, and that your focus remains strong. My goal as your regional representative was to reach each campus and provide assistance for chapters that showed interests. Overall, each chapter in the region either maintained membership expectations, or increased. Continue to share the importance of SNCAE with students on your campus and I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Conference!

Hello from your Southeastern Region! We were so disappointed to have to cancel our Regional Learning Day at UNCW. This has just inspired and motivated the members in our area to come to the Spring Conference! We are getting the word out in our area about the Outreach 2 Teach opportunities to get involved as well as raising awareness about the SNCAE and the benefits of being a part of this professional organization committed to educators. Recently at the Wilmington Campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College, there was an education meeting in which several members joined the SNCAE and signed up for the conference in the spring! We look forward to seeing many new faces this year at the conference! Way to go Wesleyan College!

Western Region On March 3rd, the UNCA SNCAE Chapter teamed up with the YMCA Rise program at W.D.Williams Elementary to celebrate Read Across America with a Dr. Seuss theme in honor of the writer/illustrator's birthday on March 2nd. SNCAE members, led by their chapter President/state President Elect Runda Alamour, helped an eager group of 4th graders make their own "Cat in the Hat" hat, Seuss-themed bookmarks, and helped them dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character at the photo booth. Of course, it wouldn't have been a Read Across America event without ending the afternoon with some personal reading time in the book corner. Students left with all their unique crafts reminding them to read, as well as with books that they won as prizes. Everyone had a great time, and the best part was that all students (college and elementary alike) were able to share their love of reading with one another and sign the Read Across America pledge to remain lifelong readers.

In the picture above, SNCAE members at Barton are gathered together for their monthly executive meeting. Details about the Spring Conference were shared, including other professional opportunities. The SNCAE would like to recognize Barton for staying on task with their monthly meetings!

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University SNCAE and Emergent Leader Series The chapter did collaboration with the NEA Retired Teachers Association of Greensboro for a panel discussion. The A&T students and the retired teachers engaged in conversation about how public schools have changed and discussed different aspect of this profession that all future educators need to consider to engage with diverse students. The conversation was directed by member Marvin Smith. This was the first meeting of a mentoring program between the retired teachers and SNCAE members.
