Welcome to our award-winning festival Welcome to the 2017 Skye Festival - Fèis an Eilein - an annual celebration of island culture and performing arts. This year we celebrate 26 years since the Festival was started. Originally a two-week festival, we resurrected the event in 2014 as one of the best small-venue festivals in Scotland, and received the award of the Highland Community Initiative of the Year in 2014. The Festival is organised by SEALL - Skye Events for All - one of Scotland’s leading rural touring promoters, and we work closely with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s Gaelic College. SEALL offers a programme of over 30 events, with some of the top names in Scottish traditional music, a visit from the Circus, a week of Jazz with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, an international world music premiere, and some great Gilbert and Sullivan. We also work with the community of Sleat who provide charity cafés, house parties, cèilidhs, exhibitions and environmental days. Skye Festival events are organised by Duncan MacInnes, Artistic Director, SEALL The SEALL – Skye Events for All – one of the

MUSIC FROM THE ISLANDS Pipes, fiddle and song
The musical talent coming out of the Hebrides is quite remarkable. Tonight four musicians give us fiddle, box and bagpipe music with some songs thrown in. ANNE MARTIN: BAWDY
GAELIC SONG With Ian MacPherson, Peter Mackay and Ingrid Henderson
Folksinger Anne Martin reveals the risqué references in Gaelic song that have been lost over time. She takes us on a romp through the titillating, bawdy and sometimes downright filthy Scottish Gaelic songs. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, even the most celebrated Gaelic poets wrote verse that was exuberantly and excessively rude and there is an oral tradition of obscene and euphemistic songs. Anne teases out the suggestive references taking us from the Isle of Skye through the rabble-rousing cèilidh house to the work of Scotland’s most famous poet, Robert Burns. An Leabhar Liath – The Light Blue Book: 500 years of Gaelic Love and Transgressive Verse was published in late 2016 by Luath Press and collated by Peter MacKay and Iain MacPherson, both with strong Skye connections. For ages 16 and over.
ÒRAIN DRABASTA ÀS AN LEABHAR LIATH Bidh an seinneadair Anna Mhàrtainn a' taisbeanadh nan òran drabasta Gàidhlig a chailleadh thar nan linntean. Bidh i gar stiùireadh tro òrain a tha druiseach is feòlmhor agus uaireannan dìreach mì-mhodhail! Anns an 19mh linn agus tràth san 20mh, bhiodh na bàird Ghàidhlig a bu chliùitiche fiù 's a' sgrìobhadh rannan a bha uabhasach mì-modhail agus tha òrain dhrabasta rim faicinn anns an dualchas gu cinnteach. Bidh Anna a' taisbeanadh nam faclan amh agus gar stiùireadh bhon Eilean Sgitheanach tro thaighean-cèilidh ùpraideach gu obair a' bhàird Albannaich a bu chliùitiche, Robert Burns. Chaidh An Leabhar Liath fhoillseachadh ann an 2016 le Luath Press agus chaidh a dheasachadh le Pàdraig MacAoidh agus Iain Mac a' Phearsain, dithis aig a bheil ceanglaichean dlùth leis an Eilean Sgitheanach. Airson daoine a tha 16 bliadhna a dh'aois agus nas sine.

THE SON OF THE SHEIK Two silent movies and a keyboard
The Son of the Sheik (1926, 68 mins) stars Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky. Valentino appears as both the father and his son, the passionate desert leader who falls in love with Yasmin, a dancing girl. It is Rudolph Valentino’s last film and he is often cited as the Silver screen’s greatest lover. This film demonstrates why his reputation is so justly deserved. The evening will start with a short Buster Keaton film. Steven Gellatly provides the live music and has a few songs up his sleeve to fit the action. Scientist by day, composer and pianist by night, he has written and performed live scores for films such as The Lodger, Nosferatu and Sunrise. This is a ‘Pay What You Like’ event.

16 YEARS TILL SUMMER
Scottish documentary/feature filmed in the Highlands
Director and Cinematographer Lou McLoughlan will cycle to Skye to introduce her film and field some questions. When Uisdean returns home to nurse his dying father, after
spending 16 years in prison, he attempts to re-build a normal life in his home village. Set in the healing and beautiful landscape of the Scottish Highlands, the film inevitably explores themes of redemption but the director’s main focus is on the trusting relationships Uisdean builds with his father and girlfriend; both of whom are inspired by the 'new start' he promises to share with them. But is Uisdean able to change his destructive ways?

A Sophabulous Step Dance Weekend with workshops led by dancer Sophie Stephenson who specialises in a close to the floor style of percussive Scottish step dance. She is dedicated to promoting and passing on the tradition and has collaborated on creative projects which have led her to teach and perform at festivals throughout Scotland and internationally in Ireland, France, Spain, Norway, Canada and America. For this weekend Sophie will be joined by fiddle player and step dancer Sarah-Jayne Shankland. The workshops will cover a variety of traditional strathspey, jig and reel steps. LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED Leave No Stone Unturned is an artist’s book that gathers together a number of works by Katharine Barrington, including paintings, installations and performances. Turning to the sea and mountains these works have all been made or performed over the last year in and around Sleat. They are an ongoing attempt to find purpose and humour down by the shore. Please look out for copies at Feis venues and local businesses.

Learn a little Gaelic—Bruidhinn Gaidhlig A bheil thu ag iarraidh beagan Gàidhlig ionnsachadh? Do you want to learn a bit of Gaelic? Gaelic - traditionally the language of the Garden of Eden - is returning, through our Gaelic Medium Primary School, Bun Sgoil Shlèite or Sleat Primary School, and further education at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s Gaelic College. Gaelic is not (yet) used widely within the community, and not all Fèis helpers have Gaelic, but listen out.

Heart of the Gaelic community
T
here is something very special about Eilean Iarmain. Located in one of the most idyllic settings on the Isle of Skye, with its panoramic views across the Sound of Sleat to the Scottish mainland, Eilean Iarmain is a place of stunning natural beauty and a unique enchantment. This is a place renowned for its magical allure. There is much more to Eilean Iarmain, however, than its magnificent vistas. At Hotel Eilean Iarmain, the charming award-winning 19th century inn, open all year, visitors can relax in the cosy Pràban Bar, warm up by a log fire and enjoy candlelit dinners in the Birlinn Restaurant, as recommended in the Good Food Guide. The popular Pràban Bar is the ideal place to enjoy evenings of live music and traditional song in a friendly ceilidh atmosphere, with an excellent range of whiskies and real ales, as well as the award-winning in-house Gaelic Whiskies. Nestled by the 18th century stone pier of Eilean Iarmain are An Talla Dearg, Floraidh, and The Whisky Shop providing excellent retail therapy. An Talla Dearg, the seasonal gallery, hosts artists’ exhibitions throughout the summer months. Floraidh has a beautiful range of clothing, accessories and jewellery. The Whisky Shop not only sells the premium range of Gaelic Whiskies and related gifts, but also provides whisky tasting experiences. Tucked behind Floraidh, by the entrance to the Whisky Shop, The Gaelic Gin production will shortly begin in the bespoke bothan. Head of Whisky Sales, Rosalyn MacLeod, said: “The distilling of Gaelic Gin will provide another attraction for visitors. Among the Gin related opportunities visitors can create personalised labels as a gift or to mark a celebration and learn about the distilling process.” “Following the Gaelic Whiskies tradition, the names of The Gaelic Gin range will reflect the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Gaelic. We like to suggest the flavour of the spirit is greatly improved by having Gaelic on the label!”

Sir Iain Noble and Eilean Iarmain
A
t the heart of Eilean Iarmain is the Gaelic heritage, language and culture. Sir Iain Noble, a man of remarkable vision and one of Scotland’s most far sighted entrepreneurs, believed that pride and morale in the Gaelic language and culture were key to economic development in the Highlands and Islands. He made it his life’s mission to bring greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of the vital relevance of Gaelic and raising the profile of its rich linguistic heritage locally, nationally and internationally. Establishing Fearann Eilean Iarmain in 1972, Sir Iain made a commitment to reversing the decline in Gaelic and reinvigorating the local economy. Promoting the heritage and culture through commercial enterprises and focusing on innovative and ambitious endeavours, ensuring Gaelic in the working environment, education, and the community. As part of his endeavours to ensure Gaelic at all levels of education, Sir Iain established one of the first Gaelic play schools and founded the Gaelic College of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. Sir Iain’s intrepid and indomitable spirit played a key role in imparting and inspiring the next generation. The whisky business of Pràban na Linne, The Gaelic Whiskies, was founded in 1976 by Sir Iain to create employment and career opportunities in the area and to provide an authentic whisky, of quality, for the Gaelic speaking Hebridean islands of Scotland. The continuing accomplishments of Fearann Eilean Iarmain are Sir Iain’s legacy.
Uisge beatha P
ràban na Linne is one of the few remaining independent businesses in the Scottish whisky industry. The principal brands developed by Sir Iain in 1976, with the names of the whiskies reflecting the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Gaelic, are Tè Bheag, MacNaMara and the popular Poit Dubh – bottled at 8, 12, and 21 years. To ensure the best of quality and following tradition, Sir Iain was an early advocate of unchilled and unfiltered whisky. The unchilfiltered Gaelic Whiskies have gained international recognition for their exceptionally soft and smooth character, acclaimed by connoisseurs

In keeping with tradition
onservation, crofting and community are important aspects in the work of Fearann Eilean Iarmain’s head stalker, Scott MacKenzie. With a wealth of experience and outdoor skills, Scott’s remit includes providing fishing, wildlife walks, Argocat safaris photography tours and outdoor pursuits, alongside the traditional sporting activities. Visitors to Fearann Eilean Iarmain can enjoy the diversity of this most special of Hebridean landscapes and gain a deeper understanding of the environment and the Gaelic culture that has shaped it – the local history, the place names, the legends. He said: “We want to provide a memorable adventure for our guests, with the very best of opportunities to spot wildlife in their natural surroundings.” As Fearann Eilean Iarmain was at the heart of the Gaelic revival in Sleat, it is very important to continue to be a strong part of the community. Scott describes Fearann Eilean Iarmain’s close ties and relationships with the crofting communities and the vital engagement with these communities to ensure the land is managed appropriately to support the traditional crofting and farming activities that are so important a part of Fearann Eilean Iarmain. Hotel Eilean Iarmain is committed to providing year-round employment, and remains open throughout the year, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy the landscape throughout the varied seasons. The winter months often provide the most beautiful and alluring views, with dramatic dawns and dusks, perfect for enjoying a wildlife photography tour.
