Class Participation: Completing the reading assignments prior to coming to class as well as attendance in class is imperative, as class discussion is a crucial part of this class and of your grade. The quality of your contribution is more important than the quantity. Individual Assignments: The individual assignment must be submitted at the BEGINNING of the session. No late submissions will be accepted. You may turn hard copies in to me or send electronic copies to me (my Email: [email protected]). The individual assignment should be no more than two typed pages, single-spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins all around, with your name in the header. No cover page is necessary. Number each of your answers clearly. The individual assignments are designed to help develop your analytical and communication skills, therefore the length limitation will be strictly followed – we will not grade anything after the second page. Group Assignment: In the first week of class, you will be asked form a group of five people (no more, and hopefully no less – we will adjust depending on class size). Please select one person from the group to send an e-mail to me indicating the five people in your group by Friday, Week 3. There are two deliverables for this assignment. The first is a one-page write-up indicating what your group is planning on doing for this assignment. This will be due on Week 6. The second deliverable from this project is a twelve minute presentation – less than 15 minutes of presentation time and less than 5 minutes of Q&A in the last three class periods of the quarter. Please note that we will stop your presentation after 15 minutes! This means that you should be able to present the essential information clearly and concisely within that 15 minutes.

Mid-term Examination: The mid-term exam will be held on Week 8. It will be an 80 minute closed-book, closed-note exam. You will be responsible for all of the material covered in the first seven weeks of class for the mid-term. Final Examination: The final exam will be held after Week 16. This will be a 90 minute closed-book, closed-note exam. The final exam will test issues covered in the second half of the course. There will be NO overlap between the two exams unless the topic is directly discussed in both sections. Grading: All assignments and examinations will be graded by the TA. If you have questions about your grade, please e-mail the TA. If there is a specific assignment or exam for which you believe a mistake in grading has occurred, please put this in writing within a week after the assignment has been returned to you. Please note that this means that the TA will regrade the entire paper, which could result in a higher or a lower grade.

Group Project Guidelines In this project you will create and present a business plan for an innovative application of IT. This could involve for instance developing a new information-based solution for a business, modifying or applying an existing information product (system) in a new setting, or describing the implementation of a new product in an existing organization. It is very important that your project be as specific as possible: you should choose a specific application, technology, business environment or company. The more general you are, the less likely you will be to write a meaningful and convincing analysis of the

business needs, market and potential. A good way to find ideas is to think about things you or your teammates enjoy doing (hobbies or everyday activities) and then think of either some aspect of these activities that you often thought you would like to improve, or that you think is deficient, and then of how the material you learned about in class can help you devise information-based strategies to achieve this goal. Projects based on situations that you are very familiar with will usually be more specific and also more successful. In your project presentation, you must include a sufficient description of the information technology and the business proposition offered by the technology such that a nontechnical venture capitalist would be able to make an informed decision whether or not to fund you. Items to pay particular attention to are: the feasibility of the project, the market, the financial justification of the project and the competitive analysis. Grading will be based on adherence to the assignment, quality of the work product, peer rankings of the presentations, and peer evaluation that rates the contribution level of each member of your group.
