San Francisco “Declaration on Research Assessment”(DORA) Prof. Bruce Alberts, Editor-in-Chief of Science in his editorial in the latest issue of the Science magazine(v.340, no.6134,p.787; 17 May 2013) delves on the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment( http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130516142537.htm) released a day earlier. Under the title- “Impact Factor Distortions”, Prof. Alberts supports the recommendations of DORA to stop using journal impact factors in judging the work of an individual scientist. The journal impact factors, which were originally introduced to evaluate a Journal have in the course of time became a way of judging a scientist’s work, not taking into account several other relevant factors in such an assessment. All researchers, scientists and science managers in our country following this debate should read this write-up of Prof.Alberts to appreciate the complex issues involved in the assessment of the individual scientist’s work.
