Fonds Description Samuel Rothstein fonds. – 1949-2003. 9.85 m of textual records. 168 photographs. 1 album. 7 audio tapes. 1 videocassette. 2 tape reels. Biographical Sketch Sam Rothstein was born on January 12, 1921, in Shenyahova, a village near Bobrysk, Belarus (part of Russia at the time). He came to Canada in 1922. He earned a BA in French and English from UBC in 1939, an MA in French and English from UBC in 1940, a BLS in 1947 from the University of California and a PhD. in Librarianship from the University of Illinois in 1954, becoming the first Canadian to hold a Ph.D. in Librarianship. He started as a reference librarian at the UBC Library in 1947. He was subsequently promoted to Head of Acquisitions (1948); Assistant and Associate University Librarian (1954); Acting University Librarian and Founding Director of the School of Librarianship (1961); Director and Professor of Librarianship (1970-1986) and Professor Emeritus in 1986. Rothstein served in many professional associations and learned societies: as president of the American Association of Library Schools (AALS), the British Columbia Library Association (BCLA), the Pacific Northwest Library Association (PNLA), and the Canadian Association of Library Schools (CALS); as officer of the American Library Association (ALA), the Canadian Library Association (CLA), the Bibliographical Society of Canada and the Canadian Council of Library Schools (CCLS). He also was a consultant for the Science Secretariat of Canada (1969); a Visiting Scholar at the University of Hawaii (1969); a Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto (1970) and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1973); a consultant for various libraries (19701977); the Librarian-in-Residence at the University of Toronto (1979); and a Research Fellow at the University of Toronto Centre for Research in Librarianship (1981-1982). He is also listed in biographical dictionaries and encyclopedias such as the Canadian Who's Who, Who's Who in America, ALA Yearbook of Library and Information Services, and Who's Who in the World. His monographic publications include The Development of Reference Services (1955); Training Professional Librarians for Western Canada (1957); co-author of As We Remember It (1970); The University – The Library (1972) and Rothstein on Reference (1989). He wrote for several encyclopedias, contributed many articles and reviews to professional journals, gave lectures and talks and served on editorial boards of several

encyclopedias and journals. His awards include the ALA's Beta Phi Mu Award for distinguished service to education for librarianship (1988), the Carnegie Corporation Fellowship (1951-1954); the BCLA's Helen Gordon Stewart Award (1970); an honorary D. Litt. degree from York University of Toronto (1971); the CLA's Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award (1986); and the ALISE Award for Outstanding Professional Contributions to Library and Information Science Education (1988). Outside of the academe, Rothstein's record of public service includes his involvement as Councilor of the BC Medical Library Service, President of the Vancouver Public Library Trust (1987-1988), Board member and President of the Vancouver Jewish Community Centre (1962-1972); Board member of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver (19931999) and Divisional Chairman of the Vancouver Combined Jewish Appeal (1992-1995). Sam Rothstein retired from UBC at the end of 1986 after a 50-year association with the UBC as student, teacher, librarian, researcher and administrator. He died 8 July 2014 at the age of 93. Scope and Content The fonds consists of records that Rothstein created and received as student, teacher, librarian, researcher and administrator. It includes correspondence, reports, handwritten notes and drafts, talks and articles, both published and unpublished ones, minutes of various meetings, photographs, research projects, talks and articles and biographical information. The fonds is arranged into 12 series: UBC School of Librarianship, Accreditation, Course Materials, UBC Library, UBC Committees, External Committees, Correspondence, Personal, Talks and Articles, Publications, and Photographs. Notes File list available. Title based on provenance of fonds. Donated to the University Archives in March 2003 by Sam Rothstein. An additional file (12-9a) was donated by Rothstein in October 2003. Records in boxes 28-31 originally included with UBC Library records and transferred in January 2014. Original file titles were retained, as has most of the physical arrangement of the files within the series. Selected photographs have been digitized and added to UBC Archives' Historical Photograph Database (UBC 70.1).

Series Descriptions UBC School of Librarianship series. – 1957, 1960-1987, 2001. 1.34 m of textual records. 1 album. Series consists of correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports, course descriptions, newsletters, publications, newspaper clippings and a photo album pertaining to Rothstein's administrative and teaching activities as director and professor of the School of Librarianship at UBC. The records are arranged in six sub-series: Faculty Meetings, School of Librarianship Committees, Term Openings, Two-Year Master of Library Science Programme, Subject Files, and Newsletters. Some restrictions apply. Accreditation series. – 1963, 1976, 1983-1985. 14.5 cm of textual records. Series includes information on the visits of the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation (COA) to the UBC School of Librarianship in 1963, 1976 and 1984. It includes correspondence, memoranda, hand written notes, visiting team schedules, drafts, reports and printed materials prepared by the School and COA. Course Materials series. – 1957-1958, 1960-1986, 1989. 2.8 m of textual records. Series consists of lecture notes, course outlines and schedules, reading lists, articles, course assignments, exam and answer sheets, bibliographies, index cards, reports and related correspondence from courses given by Rothstein. Series contains four sub-series: UBC School of Librarianship, UBC Faculty of Education, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and elsewhere. The records in the series are arranged by course number and name. UBC Library series. – 1949-1964. 56 cm of textual records. Series consists of materials relevant to the UBC Library and includes reports and minutes of the UBC Library Division Heads Meetings. These were during the years Sam Rothstein was Head of the Acquisitions Department (1948-1951), Assistant University Librarian (1954-1959), Associate University Librarian (1959-1962) and Acting University Librarian (1961-1962).

UBC Committees series. – 1955-1976, 1978-1980, 1983, 1986. 29 cm of textual records. Series consists of minutes of meetings, reports and correspondence pertaining to Rothstein's involvement with several committees at UBC. The records are arranged in three sub-series: Senate Library Committee, Faculty of Arts Committees, and Other Committees. External Committees series. – 1945-1946, 1953-1976, 1978-1988. 1.77 m of textual records. Series consists of minutes of meetings, reports, correspondence, conference proceedings, newsletters, printed materials, financial statements and newspaper clippings pertaining to committees external to the University with which Rothstein was involved. Series contains two sub-series: Professional Association Committees and Other Committees. The records in the sub-series are arranged alphabetically by association and committee. Correspondence series. – 1954-1999. 1.24 m of textual records. Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence with various library associations, library schools, book and magazine publishers, students and alumni, faculty, university departments and other library schools. It includes handwritten letters, typed originals, as well as photocopies, carbon copies, cards, memoranda, invitations to speaking engagements, etc. The series reflects Rothstein's system of organizing the correspondence files by year and by subject (or "special case"). The series is subdivided into two sub-series: the Correspondence by year sub-series (1954-1999) and the Correspondence by Subject sub-series (1954-1995). Some restrictions apply. Personal series. – 1937, 1939-1940, 1946-1947, 1951-2003 71.5 cm of textual records. Series consists of biographical materials, including Rothstein's curriculum vitae, correspondence, listings in various biographical directories and encyclopedias (e.g. Canadian Who's Who, Who's Who in America, ALA Yearbook), newspaper clippings, employment and appointment papers, and printouts of citations to Rothstein's publications from several citation indexes and miscellaneous files. Also included are two research projects that were never published: The Landmarks Book Project, which includes correspondence, primary source materials from the 1800s, and bibliographies and the research project on the Public Library Circulation in Canada which never got

beyond the data gathering and initial analysis stage. There are also materials from Rothstein's student days at the University of California library school (1946-1947) and the University of Illinois library school (1951-1953): his lecture notebooks, term papers, exams and drafts of his Ph.D. dissertation and M.A. thesis. Talks and Articles series. – 1949-2001. 91 cm of textual records. 7 audio tapes. 1 videocassette. 2 tape reels. Series consists of manuscripts of articles, speeches, review submissions, correspondence, articles, news clippings, and handwritten notes. The manuscripts of review submissions were sent to various publications, e.g. Library Quarterly, Library Automation, and Canadian Library Journal. The series arrangement reflects Rothstein's system of chronological arrangement of the material with the most recent documents at the front of each file.The audio tapes, the videocassette and the tape reels document the presentations, talks, radio interviews, and panel discussions given by Sam Rothstein in Toronto and Vancouver. Note: The audio tapes, videocassettes and the tape reels have been added to the UBC Archives Audio and Video Collections. Publications series. – 1953-2001. 8 cm of textual records. Series consists of reprints, off-prints, tear sheets, photocopies, galley proofs, and published copies. Series starts with the published reviews that appeared in various journals, books and encyclopedias (e.g. Library Quarterly, American Reference Books Annual, Canadian Library Journal, and the Library Science Annual). The reviews are arranged by year, and the publications are arranged alphabetically by title. Photographs series. – 1955-1979. 160 photographs: b&w and col. 8 slides: col 1 key to negatives Series consists of photographs and slides of Sam Rothstein, the School of Librarianship, the faculty and students and alumni. Selected photographs have been digitized and added to UBC Archives' Historical Photograph Database (UBC 70.1).
