Riley’s Mission Statement: Riley is a partnership between school, home, and community, dedicated to learning and growing together.

October 2013 Riley Racer Report We are always glad to see the fall leaves fly because that signals the beginning of Grandparents’ Days, some of the times we enjoy most! We love to see the children and their special “Grand People” enjoy breakfast and the various activities planned just for them. PTO has begun meeting and we welcome everyone to join (a family membership is five dollars). This group provides funding for many of the activities and supplies that enhance the outstanding teaching and learning going on at Riley Elementary School. The Fall Festival is quickly approaching on October 18th and we always need volunteers to help staff this muchanticipated PTO tradition. We would also like to remind our friends to please drive carefully and obey all postings at school and throughout the

neighborhood. Our children are walking and riding to and from school, and we want them to arrive at their destinations safely. Student interim reports went home in September and report cards will be presented to parents during parent/teacher conferences the weeks of October 21-November 1. We welcome these opportunities to share student information that helps us partner for success. We will be contacting you with more information as soon as it becomes available. As you can see, we are busy striving to do many important things in the best interests of our students, and we appreciate your support. Enjoy a glorious Fall Break (October 11thOct.14th)) and return rested and ready to roll! Happy Autumn!

Student Drop Off

E-Racer

If it is necessary for students to arrive before 8:00, please consider using the before/after school daycare program. For info call 2321264 X217. If students are not in the classroom at 8:15, they are considered tardy and must check in at the office.

If you are receiving a “hard copy” of this paper, it is either because we do not have your email address or have the wrong email address for you. If you did not get an email copy and would like one, please email . We will make the change or addition to our database.

Student Pick up If it is necessary for you to pick up your student before 2:45, we ask that you do so before 2:30. The time between 2:30 and 2:45 is used to complete last minute instructions in the classroom. We’re sorry if this presents an inconvenience, but feel this is in the best interest of the students and staff.

Biddy Ball Sign up information for the Riley Biddy Ball program was included in the folder you received at the beginning of the school year. Registration forms must be turned in by October 10. Skill evaluations will be held at 6:00pm on Mon. Oct 21 for K/1 grade, Tues. Oct 22 for 2nd/3rd grade, and Thur. for 4th/5th grade. It is important for each child to attend so teams are evenly matched.

Character Trait Award Each month the classroom teachers have the opportunity to nominate one student for a Character Trait award. September’s Character Award was for RESPECT: “Showing appreciation and regard for others” Noah Howard from Mrs. Swan’s fourth grade class is the winner of the character award for RESPECT. Noah’s classmates notice that he is always kind to other people. If a classmate loses a pencil or can’t find something, Noah will stop what he is doing to help them. He shows everyone respect by always saying hello and giving them a smile. He can play with others at recess in a kind and

caring manner. Noah never raises his voice and yells at others, even if he is on a losing team during kickball. We are so proud to have Noah representing our class for the character trait of RESPECT. Keep up the good work Noah! Others nominated listed with their teachers were:

Madalynn Eatmon…Mrs. Shore Cassidy Pettijohn…Ms. Taylor Olivia Cleveland…Mrs. Toney Bryce Norris….Mrs. Duncan Addison Koie…Mrs. Howard Sydney Frye…Mrs. McKay Kailyn Pitts…Mrs. Jarvis Sam Willey…Mrs. May Wyatt Crockett.…Ms. Pell

Eligh Price…Mrs. Bogle Jedidiah Fritz…Mrs. Henry Landon Grahek….Ms, Raley Jackson Toberman…. Mrs. Butts Colin Lee.…Ms. Ray Sierra Johnson.…Mrs. Harden Bria Cottrell…Mrs. McFarland Sara Mace …Mrs. Minderman

Media Center Things are running smoothly here in the media center. However, the overdue books are starting to accumulate. Please help your child remember to bring back his/ her library book(s) each week. If a book has been lost, the fee to replace is $5 (paperback) or $10 (hardback) OR it can be replaced with another book in decent condition and of similar value (paperback for a paperback/hardback for a hardback). Please don’t hesitate to call or email with any questions or concerns. **Volunteer help is needed! If you are looking for ways to get involved here at Riley, please consider the library. There is always work to be done in the library involving a variety of tasks. I would like to extend an invitation to all parents and grandparents to get involved in your child's media center experience. If you can volunteer a couple of hours either in the morning or afternoon one day per week, please let me know! Book Fair!! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming! The fall book fair will run Wednesday, Oct. 30 – Friday, Nov. 8 in the science lab. Students will have the opportunity to go to the fair during their library time and after school each day until 3:15pm. It will close at 10:00am on Nov. 8. . We will be open during 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades’ Grandparent Days. It will also be open for the entire Read-A-Thon on Nov. 6. This is a great time to buy books for Christmas and birthdays! There is no tax on any of the purchases. If you send in a check with your student, please make it payable to “Riley Elementary”. Parents may use their Master Card or Visa credit card. The profits from the book fair are being set aside

to help make technology and book purchases for our media center and school. By making purchases at the book fair, the money circulates back into the school media program that reaches every student and teacher. Thank you for your support! Please contact me if you are interested in helping with the fair! [email protected]
