In 2013, there were 23 million U.S. adolescent and young adult men. The July 2014 labor force participation rate for 16- to 24-year-old men was 38 percent. In 2013, 81 percent of young men had completed at least a high school education. In 2013, 40 percent of White, 38 percent of Black, and 35 percent of Hispanic male students grades nine through twelve reported current use of marijuana. In 2013, 12.4 percent of White, 37.5 percent of Black, and 16.5 percent of Hispanic male students grades nine through 12 reported having had sexual intercourse with four or more persons during their lives. In 2013, 12 percent of White, 16 percent of Black, and 9 percent of Hispanic male students grade nine through 12 reported feeling so sad or hopeless almost every day for 2 or more weeks in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities. In 2013, 4 percent of White, 6 percent of Black, and 3 percent of Hispanic male students grades nine through 12 reported having made a plan about how they would attempt suicide. In 2013, the homicide rate was 2.2 per 100,000 for White, 45.0 per 100,000 for Black and 11.7 per 100,000 for Hispanic adolescent men. 41 percent of young adult men have not visited a doctor in the past 12 months.

VOLT: GENERATE MY HEALTHY FUTURE PLAN Hold a private conversation or series of conversations on healthy future between a health educator(s) and all or some program youth. Intermediate/facilitate a youth-parent conversation on the youth and family’s healthy future. Organize a “Generate My Healthy Future Plan” meeting for youth-parent or youth-caring adult pairs to have healthy future conversations with your program youth. Organize a community-wide “Generate My Healthy Future Plan” campaign for youth, youth-caring adult pairs, and youth-health professional pairs to have healthy future conversations with all youth in the community (or all youth of a subset, such as all 15-yearolds, all youth living in a particular neighborhood, etc.). Develop a group health promotion activity for your program youth (provided you design the session so as not to lead to youths’ disclosure of personal health information). Incorporate content, in full or in part, into organization’s life skills program or activities. Incorporate content, in full or in part, into school’s health education curriculum. VOLT POSTER Display the poster in your school or community setting. Distribute posters to settings throughout your community or agency service area.
