THE IMPORTANCE OF MANGROVES FOR PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE BUFFERS AGAINT COASTAL EROSION AND PROTECTION FROM STORMS

AN IMPORTANT, DIVERSE HABITAT FOR MANY LIFEFORMS, INCLUDING ENDANGERED AND ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT SPECIES INCOME GENERATION FOR SHORELINE COMMUNITIES

Much maligned as 'smelly, swampy, mosquito-ridden places', the true beauty and value of mangroves should not be overlooked. Dominating many coastlines in tropical and subtropical areas, mangroves are a bridge between terrestrial and marine environments. They are also extremely productive ecosystems. The forests transfer organic matter and energy from the land to the sea, forming the base of many marine food webs. They are also home to a wide variety of marine and terrestrial life, and serve as nurseries for many coral reef and commercially important fish species. In addition, mangrove forests play a vital role in trapping sediments, thereby stabilizing coastlines and protecting coral reefs and sea grass meadows. These forests are found between 32 degrees north and 38 degrees south of the equator, in sheltered, inter-tidal areas that receive a high annual rainfall.

Mangrove Conservation and Development of Mangrove Park at Gorai:

Objective: To educate the citizens of Mumbai about the value of the mangrove ecosystem to their wellbeing, and in turn running a drive for environmental awareness in the citizen and visitors. Setting mangrove conservation and a mangrove interpretation centre right next to three of the most well-known tourist attractions in Mumbai: Essel World, Water Kingdom and Global Vipassana Pagoda. This will bring in the population. Taking advantage of this pull of crowd we can set up a centre which will emphasize on environmental importance of mangroves and bio-diversity of the coastal areas.

Design Strategy : ATTRACT Attract attention of the masses providing recreational activities which in tern initialises the process towards awareness of environmental facts, threats & issues.

EDUCATE Educating visitors about the mangroves and coastal marine bio diversity. Making them understand current scenarios and benefits of the mangroves and environment.

ENGAGE Adding activities like NIC, Board walks, Kayak Trails etc. which hold their interest in the initialising Active Social Participation In Environmental Issues.

Design Proposal Entry to the site is planned from the Dumping ground formal entrance . With security cabin and ticket window to ensure the secured access and as a part of revenue generation from the site. The Centre promoting Environmental awareness should be made with minimum interference with nature around. Hence Road access is only provided at the boundary of the site along dumping ground also the Centre is designed as a single structure with minimal footprint. The Structural system is planned as a piled foundation and super structure lightly rests on them. The superstructure is to be built in Recycled Containers in modular geometry. Each module measuring 13.71m x 2.43m x 2.79m

Design Proposal- Boardwalk Mangrove trail:

800m long Mangrove trail is proposed for taking visitors right in to the mangroves. It is laid along the high tide line which is richer belt having more varieties of species are found. Along with the walking trail within the mangrove forest, Kayak trail is also proposed. These Kayaks will be operated by local fishermen, generating income for locals. The pause points are introduced within the mangrove trail which facilitated the visitor to take rest and also provides the location for pick up or drop points for kayak trail. They also hold informative for mangrove as reference while board walk. At the diversion nodes we have proposed Water retention pond, Mangrove nursery and Mud crab pane. These nodes will also hold the selfie points attracting the crowds to boardwalk.
