The anticipated positions serve as the Chief of the Safety Controls Team and Chief of the Human Factors Team. The positions are responsible for the overall guidance, direction, and supervision of the Safety Controls Team or the Human Factors Team within the Protective Technology Branch (PTB), which is composed of engineers, physical scientists, and other research staff. The positions are also responsible for conducting independent research projects in the areas of safety engineering or human factors engineering for occupational injury prevention. The Safety Controls Team researches and develops scientifically sound recommendations and controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment to protect workers. The Human Factors Team tests and evaluates, in the laboratory and actual work-sites, existing and new human-system interfaces and technological approaches to worker protection and occupational injury prevention. In consonance with broad administrative guidance provided by the Chief, PTB, the team chiefs develop proposed budget estimates and personnel allocations for project plans and programs which will be utilized to meet the goals and missions of the Team, Branch, Division and Institute. The incumbent will have a significant role in coordinating and managing Team resources to facilitate accomplishment of Team and Branch research project goals. The team chiefs also design, develop, and conduct innovative research programs and projects in safety engineering or human factors engineering which will have a significant impact on the safety and health of workers nationwide. The incumbents function as the Team Chief and first level supervisor, each over a staff of approximately 12 full time employees. Research supervisory experience, an earned doctorate degree, and training in at least one engineering related discipline are desired.
