Creative Writing: Poetry Project We will be studying poetry over the next several class sessions. In addition, you will work on your own pieces to submit for a grade. You will have some in class time, but you should plan out of class time to fully complete this project. What Good Poetry Is/Does Your daily and final poems must strive to do and be these same things to earn a good grade. Uses devices purposefully

Has rhythm

Has correct punctuation

May rhyme, may not

Has multiple drafts that show revision

Has a form that impacts meaning

Experiments with devices

Expresses emotion

Has meaning—literal and figurative

Succinct-short, but powerful

Project Requirements You will submit roughs for three poems: a rhyming poem, a free verse poem, and a song. Each poem must be a minimum of 12 lines. Each poem must use at least one device from each of the three categories of poetic devices. Each poem must meet its unique requirement of form or structure. Content of the poem is yours to select as long as it is appropriate for school. Then, you will choose two to revise and submit for a final grade. The final poetry grade will be a combination of the poem roughs, the workshop and revision on the finals, and the final poems themselves, which will be graded based on the above rubric. You will also complete an analysis for ONE of your final poems and this will make up part of the poetry project final score as well. The final poems must have a minimum of 2 drafts with clear evidence of revision attempts, and then a final. Each poem must have a minimum of one self evaluation and one teacher OR one student conference. The analysis of your poem will explain what devices you used to build it, how successful you were, and will explain the literal and figurative meaning for the poem. We will practice these things in class. All submissions must be entirely original. Plagiarism will carry a failing project grade as well as a failing course grade. USE YOUR OWN ORIGINAL WORK CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PROJECT. If your rough drafts do not show evidence of the progression of the poem, or if you do not submit rough drafts, your poem may receive a failing grade, regardless of its final quality. All submission requirements for my class remain in place and finals must be typed. Please be complete and on time to receive full credit. Homework Your homework each night will be to write 2 fresh, original poems. Each must be at least 12 lines long to receive credit. These will be due at the beginning of each class and should try to reflect our poetry rubric. These are intended as practice and as ones to select from later for finals. In addition, in class, we will begin speaking about these and build up to formal analyses. This is practice for your final project analysis.
