SECTION A Please find your own raw data set consists of more than 30 observations and answer all the questions below based on the data. Find your data from original data sources or any applied sciences textbook. You will be required to provide complete source information for your data (eg: a URL if the data come from the World Wide Web, or a photocopy of the appropriate page(s) if the data come from a printed source). Please list out the references used in alphabetical order on the last page. Please use any statistical software that you are familiar with for at least one of the questions below. 1. Calculate the mean, variance and standard deviation for the data. 2. (a) Construct a stem and leaf plot to display the distribution of the data. (b) Construct a box plot for the data. Based on the box plot, identify whether there is any outliers. (c) Based on part a and b, would you describe the distribution of the data as symmetric, skewed to the right or skewed to the left? 3.

Using a suitable class interval, (a) find the mean, median, mode and interquartile range (IQR) for the data. (b) construct a relative frequency histogram. Interpret the histogram.

SECTION B 1.

A multiple-choice test has five questions, each with five choices for the answer. Only one of the choices is correct. You randomly guess the answer to each question. (a) (b) (c) (d)

What is the probability that you answer the first three questions correctly? What is the probability that you answer all five questions correctly? What is the probability that you do not answer any of the questions correctly? What is the probability that you answer at least one of the questions correctly?

2. An experiment can result in one or both of events A and B with the probabilities shown in this probability table:

A

Ac

B

0.34

0.46

Bc

0.15

0.05

(a) Find the following probabilities: (i)

P( A)

(ii) P( B )

(iii) P( A  B)

(iv) P( A  B)

(v) P( A | B)

(vi) P( B | A)

(b) Refer to part a, (i) are events A and B mutually exclusive? Explain. (ii) are events A and B independent? Explain.
