LAY MINISTRY PROGRAM MINISTRY PREPARATION PROCESS PURPOSE Beginning in the fourth semester, the Ministry Preparation Process of the Lay Ministry Program focuses on preparation for ministry. Building on the spiritual, theological, human and pastoral foundations of the previous semesters, it provides an opportunity for practicing ministry under the guidance of an experienced supervisor. Each component of the process offers the participants the tools that will enable them to be effective volunteer pastoral leaders in their specialized ministry. COMPONENTS The Ministry Preparation Process includes the following components: Ministerial Discernment Pastoral Skills Workshops Ministry Seminar Supervised Ministry Practicum Theological Reflection Mentoring Synthesis Seminar GOALS The Ministry Preparation Process will provide the participant with a variety of experiences that will enable her/him to: Discern one’s call to a particular ministry. Understand the theological teachings and rituals that are foundational to ministry. Realize that effective ministry involves using our unique gifts. Assess one’s strengths and limitations in collaboration with a supervisor skilled in ministry and with members of the parish staff. Develop the pastoral skills necessary for a particular ministry. Come together with other persons for the purpose of theological reflection. Develop a support system with colleagues in ministry.

MINISTRY PREPARATION PROCESS MINISTERIAL DISCERNMENT Reflect on how God is calling you to ministry. Meet with Pastor/Administrator to discuss your ministry. Complete the Ministerial Discernment Process and return it by the due date. PASTORAL SKILLS WORKSHOPS Participate in all pastoral skills workshops designated by the Pastoral Institute. Complete a Workshop Assessment Form for each workshop you attend. MINISTRY SEMINAR Participate in seminar sessions designed for one’s particular ministry. Fulfill all requirements established by the Instructor. Complete the Seminar Assessment Form and return it by the due date. PRACTICUM – the supervised ministry practicum may take place in one’s parish or in a different parish/institution. Learning Agreement Complete the Ministry Self-Assessment Tool. Meet with your supervisor to discuss the Learning Agreement. Complete the Learning Agreement and send a copy to your supervisor and to the Pastoral Institute. Ministry Practice Active engagement in ministry – a minimum of 20-25 hours over six to eight months. Keep a journal of reflections on your ministry experience. Observations Two formal observations are required, three if necessary. Participate in two conferences with your supervisor to prepare for your formal observation. Meet afterwards with the supervisor (best done at the end of the session) to review the accomplishment of your plan and to assess your performance. At the designated time complete the Mid-Year Self-Assessment. At the end of the practicum complete the Final Self-Assessment and Assessment of Supervisor forms. THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION Register for the Theological Reflection sessions of your choice. Complete a Theological Reflection Form in preparation for each session. Participate in two Theological Reflection sessions. Complete the Ministerial Job Description and Service Agreement in a meeting with your Pastor/Administrator and bring it to the sixth semester Theological Reflection. Complete the Total Process Assessment Form and bring to the sixth semester Theological Reflection. MENTORING Continue to meet with your parish mentor once each semester. SYNTHESIS SEMINAR Attend the Synthesis Seminar at the end of the sixth semester.

Prayerfully complete the Ministerial Discernment Process (Appendix B), questions 1, 2 and 3 Set up a meeting with your Pastor/Administrator to discuss the Ministerial Discernment Process; provide a copy of the form to him prior to the meeting Together with Pastor/Administrator complete Question 4 of the Ministerial Discernment Process Send copy of the form to Pastoral Institute – Deadline February 29, 2012

PASTORAL SKILLS WORKSHOPS   

Register for fourth semester workshops – Deadline: February 10, 2012 Register for third-year workshops on form to be provided – Deadline August 31, 2012 Complete a Workshop Assessment Form (APPENDIX J) after each workshop and return it to the Pastoral Institute

MINISTRY SEMINAR  

Pastoral Institute assigns participants to ministry seminar based on completed Ministry Discernment Process – Deadline: June 30, 2012 Complete the Seminar Assessment Form and mail to the Pastoral Institute (APPENDIX C) – Deadline: conclusion of seminar

PRACTICUM           

Set up orientation meeting with supervisor no later than September 2012 Develop Learning Agreement with input from Supervisor’s (APPENDIX D) Send copy of Learning Agreement to your supervisor and the Pastoral Institute – Deadline: September 30, 2012 Meet with supervisor to prepare for first observation First observation by supervisor and follow-up assessment Complete Mid-year Self-Assessment; send to the Pastoral Institute (APPENDIX E) – Deadline: January 15, 2013 Meet with supervisor to prepare for second observation Second observation and follow-up assessment Complete Final Self-Assessment (APPENDIX F) Complete Assessment of Supervisor (APPENDIX G) At the conclusion of the practicum, send the following documents to the Pastoral Institute:  Final Self-Assessment – Deadline: April 15, 2013  Assessment of Supervisor – Deadline: April 15, 2013

THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION    

Participate in Theological Reflection sessions during the fifth and sixth semesters Prepare a Theological Reflection Form in preparation for each session Together with Pastor/Administrator complete the Ministerial Job Description and Service Agreement and bring it to the sixth semester Theological Reflection (Appendix H) Complete Total Process Assessment Form and bring it with you to the sixth semester theological reflection (APPENDIX I)

SYNTHESIS SEMINAR 

Attend the Synthesis Seminar during the spring semester

COMMISSIONING 

They are broad, general descriptions that explain what is to be done and the desired result. The exact method of achieving the goal will be described as learning objectives. II Learning Objectives An objective is a brief, clear statement of an outcome to be reached as a step toward each goal. An objective describes what is to be done, who will be affected and who will do it. The outcomes of an objective are stated in such a way that it is measurable.
