Welcome a. Introductions i. Welcome new committee members. Citizen Comments a. How Citizen Comments work: i. Two opportunities to present your citizen comments at each meeting (beginning and end). ii. Our bylaws limit each comment to 5 minutes. b. Citizen Comments: i. Christine Stiefel 1. Math tutoring for children of military families at Ft. Eustis 2. Lunch and learn on social security process Announcements: a. State SEAC – the next meeting is December 1st in Richmond. You can make citizen's comment. At the last meeting there was a discussion on seclusion and restraint. The reports are available for review. Dyslexia is still a big area of interest. A deaf community member shared information about making all programs available to all students. Students spoke about fewer classes available that had a skill focus - encourage to come and participate. b. Beth Haw also participated on panel about literacy. People from across the country on the challenges in education. Discussed ESSA. Committee Engagement Activity - facilitated by Dr. Butler a. Group Norms i. Treat everyone with respect. ii. Sharing time to hear everyone's voice. iii. Say what you mean, but don't say it mean. iv. Listen, then respond.

b. What do you see as the purpose of SEAC? Committee members and community members. c. Committee - Common Themes i. Advocate for students and families. ii. Bridge the gap between community concerns and staff expertise. iii. Support families and children through: information and resource sharing, voice for stakeholders, engage community. d. Support student learning. e. Provide feedback. f. Communicate in both directions. Actions: a. Create clear measurable objectives. How are they measured? How are we working towards those goals? b. Communicate, communicate, communicate. c. Listen to each other during meetings. How do we facilitate this? Group norms, building consensus. d. Find practical solutions. e. Collaboration - attending state meeting, continue citizen comments and getting responses to those (seeing the results of what has been brought up), share expertise – Tricare forces collaboration, owe it to them to communicate - how should the committee collaborate/disseminate the information? f. Methods to share information in the community - how best to do it? g. Parent fair. h. How to make participation possible - how to include those families? The Rec Center used to provide free child care. Personalize the invitation. Goals: a. Increase communication to families, staff, and community members. b. Identify communication avenues, create processes to increase consistency, set a benchmark for connecting with a certain percentage of it (what, when, how, where). c. Make social media more inviting. d. A structure/framework to reach the goal/consensus. e. Identify avenues to increase parent participation. f. Beth shared the function of the committee from the SEAC handbook. g. Advisory council - policies that effect special education educational component - advising becomes worth listening to. h. Keeping up to date with research and information. Representing all children. i. Involvement is good to give different facets. j. Committee has to work to consensus. Next steps: a.
