Issue 11

On Sunday, October 24, a cool, autumn morning, Central Baptist Church came together with friends and family to celebrate 175 years of Baptist witness in Westerly. What a good time we had! Pastor Tom warmed us up before the service, leading us in an old-fashion, gospel hymn sing. Special music was provided with the help of Frank Procaccini on sax and David Regoli on trumpet. Frank & Dave backed up the hymns and regaled us with their duets during the service, and the choir swayed to one of their favorites, “Old Time Religion Medley.” Even the sanctuary was dressed up with beautiful fall mums on the window sills. Prof. J. Stanley Lemons, Professor Emeritus from Rhode Island College, shared in his message that he had “been digging in (our) quarry to look at the rock from which this church was hewn.” He gave a fascinating talk about Central Baptist history dating back to the beginning in 1835. The entire service was enjoyed by a full sanctuary of enthusiastic worshippers. What a joy! It is good to celebrate milestones and a lot of fun, too. After worship, oh, did we have a party in Fellowship Hall! Skip & Judy Terwilliger and their mighty kitchen crew put on a wonderful lunch. As we munched, we visited with each other and perused the memorabilia on display. We, Baptists, are a hungry group, and there wasn’t much left when the last of us finally departed. May God bless each and every one who participated in making this day a special occasion and may God continue to bless Central Baptist Church. By Meredith Eckel

Pastor’s Tom’s Corner This month I have chosen to share with you a selection from Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God, by Henry & Richard Blackaby. This workbook was used by several CBC folk in a 12 week group study this past summer. (One) adjustment that is a part of knowing and doing the will of God is your coming to a total dependence on God to complete what He wants to do through you. Jesus said our relationship with Him would be like a vine and branches. He said, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). When you are God’s servant, you must remain in an intimate relationship with God in order for Him to complete His work through you. You must depend on God alone. The adjustment requires moving from doing work for God according to your abilities, your gifts, your likes and dislikes, and your goals to being totally dependent on God, His working, and His resources. This is a major adjustment, and it is never easy to make. I am God, and there is none like me…. My purpose will stand, And I will do all that I please…. What I have said, that will I bring about; What I have planned, that will I do.

(Isa. 46:9-11)

Without God at work in you, you can do nothing to produce Kingdom fruit. When God purposes to do something, He guarantees it will come to pass. He is the One who will accomplish what He intends to do. If you depend on anything other than God, you are asking for failure in Kingdom terms. Once a church asked, “O God, how do You want to reach our community through us and build a great church?” God led them to start a bus ministry and provide transportation for children and adults to come to church. They did what God told them to do, and their church grew into a great church. They were flattered when people from all over the country began to ask, “What are you doing to grow so rapidly?” They wrote a book on how to build great churches through a bus ministry. Thousands of churches began to buy buses to reach their communities, believing the method was the key to growth. Later many sold the buses, saying, “It didn’t work for us.” It never works. He works! The method is never the key to accomplishing God’s purposes. The key is your relationship with a Person. When you want to know how God wants you to reach your city, start a new church, or be involved in His work, ask Him. Then when He tells you, don’t be surprised if you can’t find any church that is doing it that same way. Why? God wants you to know Him. If you follow someone else’s plan, use a method, or emphasize a program, you tend to forget about your dependence on God. You leave the relationship with God and go after a method or a program. That is spiritual adultery. Good books, successful methods, creative programs, and others’ success cannot take the place of your relationship with God. They never do the work. God does the work. Apart from Him you can do nothing (see John 15:5). By focusing on anything other than God as the answer, you rob yourself and your church from seeing God at work. You keep yourself and your church from knowing God. That is a great tragedy for many in our day. May God deliver us from that. Does that mean God will never lead you to develop an organized program or follow a method? No. But only God has the right to tell you what to do. Don’t take the initiative to decide for yourself what you will do. Wait before God until He tells you what His will is for you. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isa. 40:31) You may think of waiting as a passive, inactive time. Waiting on the Lord is anything but inactivity. While you wait on Him, pray with a passion to know Him, His purposes and His ways. Watch circumstances and ask God to interpret them by revealing His perspective to you. Share with other believers to find out what God is saying to them. As you wait on the Lord, actively ask, seek, and knock (see Matt. 7:7-8). While you wait, continue doing the last thing God clearly told you to do. By waiting, you shift the responsibility of the outcome to God, where it belongs. When God gives you specific guidance, He will do more through you in days and weeks than you could ever accomplish in years of labor on your own. Waiting on Him is always worth the effort. His timing and His ways are always right. Depend on Him to guide you in His way and in His timing to accomplish His purpose. Blessings, Pastor Tom

Life is full of challenges. The daily search for food and shelter as well as for health and happiness presses on each of us. Aside from the necessities of life, each of us are always searching for a better life position in what makes us the happiest. This brings me to what should be the most important joy in our lives which is the wonder gift of salvation given by Jesus in dying for us.

“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the Word and doctrine. -1 Timothy 5:17 “I was at my grandson's eighth-grade football game when the referee indicated there was a penalty and stopped play. Apparently, after the ball was thrown, the boy who passed it was tackled, prompting a penalty flag. The announcer from the press box said: ‘There is a flag on the field. The penalty is roughing the pastor . . . I mean, roughing the passer.’ As soon as he said it, I thought to myself, God could give that penalty to some churches today! “It's not that pastors are perfect. If that is what we are looking for, then pastorless churches would be the norm. It's that God calls on us to honor those who lead us spiritually, particularly ‘those who labor in preaching and teaching’ (1 Tim. 5:17 ESV). In my opinion, pastoring is one of the hardest occupations on the planet. We live in a sophisticated, fast-paced, and complex world, and our expectations for ‘high-performance’ pastors often set the bar at unattainable heights. “So, let's switch the focus and become high-performance church members who honor our pastors with words of encouragement and prayer. A supportive note or a ‘thank you’ in the foyer will go a long way to stimulate pastors to serve with joy and efficiency. -Joe Stowell” Let us remember this as we honor our pastors. In Christian Love, Tiffani Kaminski

I have chosen to write about this because of the challenges we as a church family face in the present economy and world situation. We are involved in the search for a new pastor who we hope will lead the way to revitalization of the church. We also must approve a spending plan and contend with desired and mandated improvements to our church home. We must keep our church and each other in prayer, trusting in Christ to lead us and provide for us his perfect plan for our salvation. Yes, we have challenges! Please stay focused in your prayer and commitment. Please consider giving of your time, talent, and financial resources as we face these challenges with Christ Jesus as our perfect leader to reach the goals he has set for us. Yours in Christ, George Champlin Jr.

The Board of Missions The Mission Board had its regular meeting in October. We thank the Trustees Board who prepared and served a well received meal at the WARM shelter in September. The WARM meal continues to be a well received CBC mission. We are always looking for more church family members to help us with this great local outreach. We are looking forward to and planning for the upcoming holiday season. The Thanksgiving offering will be taken on November 14, 21 and 28. It will be divided equally between Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, WARM, and the Jonnycake Center. Last year we were able to help many local families with our "Christmas Giving Tree". We plan to put the tree up in Fellowship Hall on November 28- the first Sunday in Advent. The tree will be decorated with ornaments. Each ornament will contain an item on someone's "wish list" who is from PNC, Ezekiel Ministries, or someone with a need from our church family. If you or someone you know has a special need for Christmas gifts please let someone on the Mission Board know as soon as possible. The gifts will be presented during our traditional White Gift Service in December. We have much to be thankful for. We Wish Each One A Blessed Thanksgiving! Mission Chairperson, Kay Perrone

The Board of Christian Education The Board of Christian Education was busy with the church yard sale last month. We could not have asked for a nicer day! The sale was a great success for everyone. The board was able to raise money for Christian education programs – thanks to the generous donations of items from the congregation. The youth had a great bake sale and the Friendship Circle sold coffee, homemade muffins, and adorable fall merchandise. Another circle member sold knives. The Westerly High School junior class sold bracelet beads and made $140. My resistance was low and I ended up buying a little something from everyone. There were also 10 tables rented outside in the parking lot where you could find a little bit of everything. We are truly grateful to all those who participated, baked, purchased, donated, helped, and prayed for its success. THANK YOU!! The Board of Christian Education did something a little different this year. At the church yard sale, we set up a table of Christian music and books and bibles for free to anyone who wished to take one. It was our sincere hope to give to the community and give them a chance to have the word of God and other Christian materials at no cost. We believe we have a duty not just to our own congregation but to all of Westerly and the community to share Jesus Christ. We hope to raise the awareness of Central Baptist Church as a body of believers who are excited to share their faith. We pray for more opportunities in which God can use us to do just that! We will be celebrating the beginning of advent this month with our annual family advent night on Sunday, November 28th at 5:30 pm in fellowship hall. There will be a beef stew dinner, Christmas crafts, advent wreath making, and fellowship. We will be inviting our truth tracker families as well. It is for all ages. This is an opportunity for you to invite your friends and family. So be sure to join us!

Truth Trackers began last month. We were very excited to welcome some new children. We more than doubled our number of children from our last meeting. Praise God! We are so looking forward to what God has for this ministry! We’ve ordered a two-year subscription to Children’s Ministry magazine for the church library. It is a magazine for Christian adults who work with children from birth to sixth grade. It is published by Group Publishing. We strongly encourage you to check out this magazine both online (www.childrensministry.com) and in our library. It is a great resource to find practical ministry ideas, advice, encouragement, teacher tips, bible activities, valuable training, special resources, and age-level insights. If you currently teach or volunteer or are prayerfully considering helping in a Christian children’s ministry we strongly recommend you check it out! In service to Jesus Christ, Marie Bertsch, Board of Christian Education

175th Anniversary Celebration continued from page 1 Dear Members and Friends at Central Baptist: On behalf of the congregation at Dunn’s Corners Community Church, Presbyterian, we want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on one hundred and seventy-five years of dedicated service to Christ and to this community. Central Baptist is certainly a Light to our community, and we want to express our thanks. May God continue to bless you in His service. In His Name, Art Ganz Clerk of Session

The Reverend James R. Glenn, III

Dear Beloved Members and Friends of Central Baptist Church, Heartfelt congratulations to you as you celebrate your 175th anniversary! Surely you celebrate today a rich history and a promising future of faith development and service in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You are a congregation rich in servant leaders. My nearly eight years among you we enjoyed the development of your current mission statement and a variety of strategic ministry objectives. We enjoyed an annual spiritual renewal weekend with Christ Church, Episcopal. Many new individuals and families entered our active membership and/or were baptized. During these eight years we witnessed three of our active members embrace the call to pastoral ministry. It was a season of harvest with evidence of God’s fruit everywhere. I thank each of you for this faithful, joyful tenure. It is with great affection that I recall my service in Westerly. Though I am unable to be present for your special anniversary celebration, please know that I will be with you in spirit and in prayer. May the Lord of life pour His blessings upon you this day and always as you continue to be a lighthouse of and to Christ’s love for the world. In love and prayers, Wesley A. Smith “Wes”

Poem written by Mary E. Ellis in celebration of our 150th Anniversary --1985 Contributed by B. Higgins

We see, O God, thy blessing Upon our church today. Guide thou her path, her future, Make her a shining ray. Throughout our joyous life span, Throughout this area blessed, We honor now our Savior And on his mercy rest.

As Central Baptist wakens Again to God’s great call, May we find goals triumphant And give to him our all. May God direct us daily And hold us ‘neath his wing, As we most humbly thanks him And for his glory sing.

Central Baptist Church of Westerly TRUTH TRACKERS

Truth Trackers began on Friday October 8 and will continue meeting on the second and fourth Friday of every month. In December we will have a special meeting that will last longer so parents may do some shopping or wrapping as the holiday season creeps up on us. More information will follow. We want to take the time to teach children about God and the Bible to give children the opportunity to experience God and faith in their everyday life, and spread the good news to others. We will start our meeting with songs followed by dinner. After dinner we will spend time together in fellowship, followed by crafts, games, and a chance to purchase something from our store at the end with coins they earn throughout the program (no one is left out).

Search Committee Report I must apologize, again, for not keeping you apprised of our activities. I was surprised when I looked back and found that nearly two months had gone by since my last report. We have been very busy since then. Shortly after my last report, we posted our position on a website called Ministrylist.com. It is connected with Gordon Conwell Seminary where their alumni can post themselves as searching and churches can do the same. Since that posting, we have received over 50 inquiries and more are still coming in. Most attach resumes and other information and some have sent CD’s and other information by mail. They also frequently have information about themselves on church or personal websites. It has been a daunting task to sort through all of the information. Some looked interesting and we requested more information. We have seriously considered 30 of those that responded, are still considering 5 of those and have had a phone interview with one. As reported earlier, we also so have received more profiles from ABCORI that now total over 70. Your committee is very concerned about finding the right person for CBC that we know the Lord has planned for us. That is why we are continuing to search in spite of the large number of candidates that we have and continue to consider. We continue to thank you all for your prayers and patience. Ron Rodehorst, Search Committee Chairman

ENTERTAINMENT AT ITS BEST The Narragansett Bay Chorus performed at Central Baptist Church on September 19. All who attended were greatly entertained by their barbershop style singing topped off with lots of down home humor. Their chorus is made of a double quartette of four ladies and four men. Their entertainment continued throughout our refreshment time which followed the concert in Fellowship Hall. The picture above shows Marty Champlin being wooed by one of the group while husband, George, looks on.

The Great, great, great grandfather of John Macomber composed this poem prior to his baptism on November 10, 1811. All words, grammar and spelling of words are as in the original handwritten copy. Thanks to Jean Smith for her assistance in deciphering the script of that era. Varses Composed by Jonathan Macomber in order to be sung at the water before he and his wife Receives Baptism. Said Macomber is in the sixty seventh year of his age and his wife in The Sixty Eight year of her age to god all glory is due from us as well as you. We are to the place where we were bound Come friends and neighbours hover round And see the Love of gods free grace That’s cald us to a heavenly place

But when we see our undone State We found that we had staid to Late But we believed in parding grace Hoping the Lord will give us rest

My friends and neighbours standing round Come view the Water and the ground Will gentely step into the flood And Seal our Covenant with god

We sighd and praid and sighd again Hoping marcy we may obtain And in our prayers we found som piece And thank the lord that give us rest

Thy instillation Lord will praise When from the Liquid grave we rise With Loud hosannahs on our tungs Will praise the as we go along

My friends and brethenon help us bless What Jesus Christ has done for us He has cald us from a sinfull place And fild our Souls with love and peaice

And as we march that heavenly rhode Will sing aloud the prase of god Will not the saints rejoice and say That two straid sheeps returned today

We prase the Lord for love and power That cald us at the Eleventh our To come into the Vineyard to Day He surely will the penny pay.

Is there more joy in heaven today Then over ninty and nine that did not stray Lord we have come to due thy will O help us Lord to Love thee Still

My friends I want you for to Seek The Sheppard that Doth feed his Sheep And follow on the Lamb of god And walk the Rhode that I jus trod

Grant use Lord thy heavenly Dove Deccend on us grace and Love Teach us o Lord the way that’s Blest That in thy name we may have rest

Grant them O Lord they Love to Come On every Soul that’s here as one Give them a measure of thy grace That they may seek the god of peace

In The Spotlight By Nancy Balentine John Macomber was drafted into the Army at twenty-one. His Korean War period service took place on the border of Czechoslovakia and Germany providing security during the Cold War with the Russian occupiers of Czechoslovakia. At the time he regarded service as a duty; now he regards it as an honor and is filled with respect for those who serve. He says, "I left a John Macomber boy and came back a man." His service interrupted a span of 47 years' employment at the Moore Company. At Westerly High a teacher named Harry Foster had engendered a respect for our country's reliance on business, and John began work at Moore's after graduation in 1947. His long and varied experiences culminated in his becoming production manager. Moore's provided not only a livelihood but also the chance to meet his wife, Mary. He says it took a lot of convincing to get her to marry him. He describes her as "the one constant in my life", and at present his activities revolve around making her comfortable as she has suffered serious injury in a fall. They have raised five children: Stephen, Kenneth, Rebecca, Karen, and Doreen. Luckily for John and Mary, they all live in the area, four in Westerly. He is active in the care of the seven grandchildren as needed. John had expected to follow his father's path into teaching before taking Mr. Foster's class. It would have been an act hard to equal because Stephen Macomber taught at RISD for fifty years - until the age of 85. In teaching Freshman Foundation he met virtually every student. His dad also directed plays, painted murals for the Works Progress Administration, taught English at Classical High, and produced high quality paintings, most of which have been sold. Not ever owning a car, his dad took the train to Providence from Westerly and walked to the locations of his landscape paintings. It must have been a long, long walk to paint the Napatree fort picture which hangs in the Central Baptist parlor. John's mother was born in New York City of Swedish parents. She was an appreciator of the arts, especially of writing. Like his father John has been a walking man. He walked to work so that Mary could have the one car. After his retirement you might have spotted John on one of his long jaunts almost anywhere in town. He enjoyed the walks and made them time to commune with God. Some arthritis has curtailed this activity. A well-spent day now consists of puttering in the yard, putting old family documents and memorabilia in order, and spending time with his large family. There were only 15 days in John's life when he was not entered on the rolls of First Baptist or Central Baptist Churches. - from Nov.5, 1929 to Nov.20, 1929. Yes, an 81 year affiliation. A key layman, Ellsworth Gray, encouraged John in his twenties to become active; he began on the stewardship committee. He became a deacon and church moderator. His best memory is of working with a distinguished committee for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the church: Ike Smith, Henry Moses, and Bob Chamberlain. He remembers his Sunday School teacher, Earl Strachan, fondly, as well as his years with the church basketball league as a coach of the Central Baptist team along with Harrison Pierce and Bob Chamberlain. At about the time of retirement in 1995, John decided he would switch his emphasis from involvement with church government to personal devotion and Bible study. Attendance at the Avondale Chapel studies on Thursday mornings and an assortment of devotional readings have been helpful. He reads materials from Billy Graham, Robert Schuller, Daily Guideposts, the Secret Place, and Devotions from the Sacred Heart League. John looks forward to winter months to catch up on his readings in history and to try to use his long and varied experiences to help Central Baptist plan for the future. Admiration comes easily to those who are acquainted with John's eagerness to serve the cause of Christ and this particular church body.

What a wonderful surprise it was to see the cover last month of the Good Word CBC News letter. Todd was very thoughtful in his words and we were reminded of the wonderful Church family we left behind. Well, here it is over a month later and we have settled into our new home. Ethan has started Kindergarten at Hilton Elementary School. He loves it and is doing very well. You will all be surprised to hear that he has been described as very articulate, outgoing and plays well with others. Colin has turned two and is doing great. He sings all the time and has really taken a liking to playing ball. He is very good at passing and throwing the ball up in the air and catching it. He has had a little trouble transitioning from what was a normal sleeping routine since being in unfamiliar places. He's almost back to normal. Alyssa has been adjusting as she misses us very much. Her school work continues to dominate her life along with working at the Barn, for lesson time. Oh, by the way, she is driving now. Her mom, Vicki, picked up a second car, so if you look hard you may see Alyssa in an older model Subaru wagon. We have acquired high speed internet, so Alyssa wants us to use a program called Skype, so that she can see us when we talk. 49 Woodfin Road has been totally repainted on the inside and the floors have been refinished. We have replaced doors, light fixtures, and Beth has even tiled our furnace and laundry room. The garage is getting a new door and opener. Overall the house is looking great and feels like home. Our neighbors have been very supportive and welcoming. We started attending the First Methodist Church of Newport News. We are not entirely sure it is going to be a fit for us, just yet, but Beth and David attended it back in 2001 and 2002 together and it has been nice to see some of the people we had once worshipped with. They have a dinner every Wednesday night and it has been a delight to attend. We miss everyone and wish you all the best especially as the Holiday's approach. We look forward to hearing the news about CBC and keeping in touch. Love in Christ's Name, David, Beth, Alyssa, Ethan and Colin

Help us to be faithful servants who look to the future with hope and expectation. Our special prayer is that you will guide us as we search for a new pastor. Please, bless those we have charged with that work and send your Holy Spirit to attend them and grant them wisdom and patience. Oh Lord, would you prepare that pastor for us. Bring us a pastor who will love us and lead us in following Jesus. It is in the Master’s name we pray. Amen
