1 Samuel 17:1-51 (NIV)

King of Hearts: A Heart of Worship “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 The essence of the Christian life can be summed up in one word: worship. 1. True worship is a way of living under the loving reign of God. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22:37-38 One of the most beautiful Greek words for worship, proskuneo, literally means “to kiss toward God.” “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Psalm 42:1-2 “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1 2. True worship is uncompromising and always growing deeper. 3. True worship leads to action. “A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23 The crossroads of real worship is the place where a knowledge of God and an experience of God intersects. “We all possess knowledge. But knowledge puffs up while love builds up.” Corinthians 8:1 You have to do something you haven't done before to experience something you haven't experienced before! You have to do something you haven’t done before to know something you haven't known before! You have to leave your comfort zone! Use your strength to crush your weakness! • How should your knowledge of God call you to experience God more? • How should your experience of God call you to want to know God more? Remind yourself that the audience is One! 4. True worship does not depend on our circumstances. “David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were

afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped.” Samuel 12:16-23 5. True worship will last forever.
