King of Hearts: A Broken and Contrite Heart No one is exempt from the pattern of sin. “Who can say, ‘I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin?’ Not me! Not any one of us.” Proverbs 20:9 (ESV) “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” Romans 3:23 (ESV) 1. Anyone can mess up and need to be confronted. Sin always has consequences. “When I kept silent my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.” Psalm 32:3-4 (NIV) Sometimes God decides it’s best to take His time in exposing someone’s sin. Whenever God’s standards are violated there is always a penalty. If you choose to sin you will pay a price. “You may be sure that your sin will find you out.” Numbers 32:23 (NIV) “An evil man is snared by his own sin…” Proverbs 29:6 (NIV) God not only does the right thing; He does the right thing at the right time. When I’m guilty of something, even if it’s not a big deal, I have a tendency to be defensive.

We are very quick to judge others’ sins before our own. “…the further we wander outside of God’s will, the more we judge others and the less we show mercy.” Beth Moore “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:3 (NIV) “Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently.” Galatians 6:1 (NIV)

2. When you mess up, fess up because you need to be forgiven. “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view. You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly in the sight of all Israel.’ Then David confessed to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the LORD.’ Nathan replied, ‘Yes, but the LORD has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.’” 2 Samuel 12:11-14 (NLT) “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10 (NIV) Once we become aware of a sin pattern in our life we need to confess it and repent of it. “God can and will forgive anything that we confess and turn from.” “How will we know that there is repentance, true repentance?” First, you will know that there has been true repentance in your own heart or someone else’s when, like David, there is first an open, unguarded admission of sin. Secondly, when there is true repentance there is a desire to make a complete break from the sin. “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.” Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)

Thirdly, true repentance brings a spirit of real brokenness and humility. “This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I am the worst of them all.’” 1 Timothy 1:15 (NLT) Finally, true repentance is a prelude to true refreshment. “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…” Acts 3:19-20 (NIV) It is never too soon to come back to God!
