Raglan Primary School Newsletter – 8th May 2015 Dear Parents/Carers, Writing this, I do not know yet what the election results will be and I don’t think I have the capacity to stay up all night to be one of the first to know! Meanwhile life at Raglan continues… We have been very busy this week preparing for the Key Stage 2 SATs. These tests come with very strict rules and we have had to make sure that we comply with everything – for example the papers have to be locked up, they must not have their wrappers opened before time and we must stick exactly to the test time limits. The Local Authority may well send someone down to check we are doing everything right so this is all a challenge. We are sure the children are going to achieve well and make all this administration worthwhile – GOOD LUCK YEAR 6!! ********** Summer is on its way and some of us have started to wear our summer uniform. Please remember to follow our simple guide which is on our website. This includes white socks for girls and black or brown shoes. Also, although it is not mentioned on our guide, could we try to keep hair accessories practical and colour coordinated! Speaking of summer we are looking forward to our Summer Fun Day organized by FOR. We still need lots of help so please do try to volunteer even just for an hour or two. If everyone does their bit we can all have the opportunity to enjoy the

social side too. Below is a list of stall availability -

ACTIVITIES

Please contact FOR if you can commit to any of these slots. ******** We have been reviewing our Presentation Policy and some teachers are concerned that ink pens are sometimes messy and cartridge changing can be time consuming.

I would like to remind parents therefore that it is perfectly acceptable for children to use roller ball pens – these are available in Smiths. These can produce a finer style and less mess. Please note that pens must have blue ink and biros must never be used. Teachers will be reinforcing in class the type of pens that can be used and encouraging children to find the pen that helps them to best achieve a lovely cursive script.

*********** Just a reminder – Year 3 and 4 children can order baguettes for lunch after half term if they wish. They can order these on a weekly basis although they can change the filling daily. Our menu is on our website – it has remained the same since February. You will see that it on a three weekly rotation so this might help parents and children to decide on a good week for baguettes. In the week before half term, w/b 18th May we will have space in our dining hall as Year 6 will be away. We are therefore inviting parents/carers of Reception and KS1 children to lunch with us during that week. Reception lunch at 11.45 and KS1 at 12 noon. If you wish to join us please make a booking via the school office – first come first served! Meals cost £2 each – very reasonable!! ********** Teachers have been increasingly concerned about the computer games that some our children are discussing. Without even having seen them it is clear that many of these are inappropriate. We see the effects of these games in children’s play as well as in their stories and this is quite worrying. One game is called Call of Duty.

We would ask that parents/carers monitor what children are playing and prevent them from being exposed to excessive violence and inappropriate language use. A useful website is:

http://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keepingchildren-safe/share-aware/

If you go onto this site and then click on Share Aware you will find advice on several games and social media including the relevant age ranges for particular games. Still on the subject of ICT, our ICT suite will be closed from next week while we have our new installation. We are very excited about this and hopeful that it will be ready for use quite soon. Of course parents/carers will be invited to see it as soon as it is ready! ********** Well done to Year 6 who raised over £200 with their cake sale last week to support their Leaving Prom. I hope I am invited! Have a great weekend! Annabelle Birleanu and Staff.
