COMMUNICATION CORNER Volunteers Needed Olivedale, being a 501( c)(3) non-profit organization requires the assistance of volunteers on a regular basis to offer the level of activities and services that have been provided over the past 40 years and also to expand. Olivedale adds approximately 20 to 30 new members each month. However, we have the same core 50 to 60 people who volunteer for most of our annual events along with the monthly food events. Due to our aging volunteer base, we have reached an

unprecedented cycle of diminishing assistance. Without volunteer help Olivedale cannot continue to hold pancake and waffle breakfasts, fish fries, 2nd Tuesday lunches, annual events like the 80+ birthday parties, health fair or craft bazaar. Therefore, the plea goes out to all those members of Olivedale who have yet to step forward to volunteer for just one event. Give us 2 hours a month and we will give you joy, community and friendship to last a lifetime.

EATING AT OLIVEDALE Coffee Club Stop in on Friday, May 6 for the monthly financial discussion group meeting at 9:30a. Topics of discussion will cover various aspects of the economy. Contact Allison Spangler at 740-653-2308 for questions. 2nd Tuesday Lunch Let’s celebrate the Kentucky Derby winner by wearing your most extravagant hat at our 2nd Tuesday lunch held on Tuesday, May 10. Keeping with a southern spirit, Chef Judy will be serving Kentucky Hot Browns. This is an openfaced sandwich with turkey, ham, bacon, tomato and cheese. Accompanied by Kentucky fried fries, and if we dare, for dessert, a mint-julep sundae. Serving will be from 11:30a -12:30p and the cost is only $6. Don’t forget to make your reservation by Friday, May 6. Volunteers needed Last Pancake Breakfast & Granny’s Attic It’s your last chance until fall to have pancakes at our pancake breakfast on Wednesday, May 18. Flood them in maple syrup served with sausage, juice, coffee or tea, served from 7:30a - 10:30a and only $4.00 per person with extra sides available for 50¢ (except scrambled eggs for $1). You can have pancakes with a side of pancakes! But try not to eat too much so you can make your way to Granny’s Attic for some bargain shopping. Volunteers needed.

Waffle Breakfast ~ Last one for the season Waffleologist Larry will be serving his admired waffles every Thursday from 8:00a - 10:00a. $3 per person includes waffles, sausage, juice, and coffee. Open to the public and please pay at the office. Waffles are healthy...they are pancakes with abs! Fish Fry is Back! ~ Volunteers Needed The teacher asked a little boy “If you caught 5 fish and I caught 3, what would we have?”. The little boy says “A fish fry.” That’s just what we are going to do! Join us on Tuesday, May 24 from 4:30-6:30p. On the menu is 2 generous servings of fish along with a baked potato and coleslaw. Take out is available and pre-sale tickets are available at the office, adults $8, children $4. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, but may be limited. We have the best fish around so come see for yourself how we “add” up! Volunteers needed

Muscles & Aging What makes our muscles work better with age? Why, exercise, of course! Muscular health is essential for healthy aging, whether it be an active retirement, or working well into one’s 60’s, 70’s or even 80’s if one so desires. Muscle motor units begin to die as we age, beginning as early as in our 30’s. With each passing decade we have fewer and fewer motor neurons and can lose approximately 10% of strength per decade. This process speeds up once we reach age 60 or so. A study published in March of this year indicates that active individuals, athletes of all levels, have approximately 25% more leg strength and 14% more muscle mass than sedentary older adults. The older athletes legs were healthier at the cellular level and resembled the muscles of people

who were decades younger. Research indicates that starting a vigorous exercise regime in one’s 50’s or older can provide similar gains and slow the eventual loss in both strength and muscle mass as one progresses into our 60’s, 70’s 80’s and beyond. (New York Times, March 2016. Basic Protein Pancakes 1/4 cup raw oats; 1/4 cup cottage cheese; 1/2 scoop protein powder 1/2 cup egg whites; Blend all the ingredients until a batter forms. Pour over a hot griddle. Flip when the edges start browning. Serve with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter and top with almonds.

Pool Sign-Up for Spring II Session, (May 9 - July 1) starts Monday, May 2. Please pick up registration slips at the front desk prior to sign up. Be sure all medical and waiver paperwork is up-to-date through July.
