For Immediate Release June 26th, 2013

Barrier around Water Treatment Plant No. 1 Crews from the City of North Battleford, North Battleford Fire Department, Office of the Fire Commissioner, and Ministry of Environment worked through the night to construct a barrier around Water Treatment Plant No. 1 in the Battlefords River Valley. “The North Saskatchewan River is not expected to peak until later this afternoon,” said Deputy Fire Chief of Operations, Brian Wilson. “We needed to ensure we were doing everything possible to protect the plant from the rising water.” In some locations, the water has reached the barrier. It was constructed on a sand base and is 720 feet long by approximately 5 to 6 feet tall. Approximately 600 tons of sand was used to fill the barrier. Wilson said G & C Asphalt Ltd. and Unicon Pipeline were instrumental in the late night and early morning hours in providing equipment and hauling sand. “We can’t say enough about the hard work and dedication of all the resources that came together and stayed to help City. We are very thankful.” Water Treatment Plant No. 1 remains shut down and the City of North Battleford has implemented an outdoor watering ban. Residents are advised to stay out of the river, off the banks, and away from any flooded out areas. The City of North Battleford will continue to update whenever there is new information.
