Emergency Services Responder Training – 30 North Battleford High School students to be selected for new program

Director of Protective Services/Fire Chief Albert Headrick with key partners announce the new program. Many young children dream of becoming a fire fighter, police officer or paramedic when they grow up. Thirty Grade 10 students representing John Paul Collegiate II, North Battleford Comprehensive High School and Sakewew High School now have a chance to get a head start on this career endeavour: The first “Emergency Services Responder Training” (ESRT) in North Battleford will start in January 2017. During their training, which will be held daily, Monday to Friday, for two hours at the North Battleford Fire Hall, the selected students will learn about Public Safety by working with the North Battleford Fire Department, WPD Ambulance, the Battlefords RCMP Detachment and the Community Safety Officers. Not only will they be trained in firefighting principles, radio communication and law enforcement, they will also be certified in first aid/CPR and EMS protocol. The students will participate in search and rescue scenarios and take part in ridealongs with the Community Safety Officers. The course offers a combination of in-class work, as well as a significant amount of hands-on training.

When students successfully complete the Emergency Services Response Training, they will have received six Certifications that they can submit when applying for employment in the Public Safety sector: Saskatchewan Fire Fighter (Level 1), Red Cross Standard First Aid, Heart and Stroke CPR-C and AED, Saskatchewan Emergency Vehicle Operations (Level 1), Incident Command System (Levels 100 and 200), and Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers (Basic Rescuer). “Even if these students don’t pursue this as a career, they have learned a lot about Public Safety and how they can help to keep their community a safe place”, says Albert Headrick, Director of Protective Services/Fire Chief and one of the key organizers of the Program. Thanks to many sponsors, the ESRT the materials required for these courses can be offered free of charge to all successful applicants. In North Battleford, only level 10 is currently available with the expectation that level 20 and 30 will follow. With each completed level, the students will receive 2 Education High School Credits. The application process is set up through the participating schools and each school has developed their own requirements and processes for applying. The number of applications the schools have received to date indicate that the ESRT is already a well-received Program by North Battleford’s High School students: Over 160 students participated in an ESRT information session held in the spring of 2016. For more information on the application process, it is recommended to contact the schools early on.
