"Wild Life"

“From the Board”

Group Photography Show by The Light Painters

Kathy Pasca, Photography

A wild life, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Over the last year, members of the Light Painters Learning Center, a North Fork based photography club, will present a collection of images representing their own version of a wild life. Images will depict "Good Night Sun" – M. Spiro nature scenes, birds, and even humans taking a walk on the wild side. This is the seventh year that the Light Painters have presented a collection of fine art photography at the Mattituck-Laurel Library’s gallery. The Light Painters Learning Center is comprised of photographers of all ages and abilities who love capturing the world around them in photographs. The group gathers monthly to share experiences, support each other and attend photo walks to areas of interest from the East End, Long Island and beyond. All are welcome to an opening reception on Sunday, March 4th, from 2-4 p.m. in the Library Gallery.

In her fourth photography show at the Mattituck-Laurel library, photographer and Mattituck resident Kathy Pasca shares photos of the waterways of the North and South Forks. A paddle boarding enthusiast since the summer of “Morton Refuge” – K. Pasca 2015, she has traversed and explored the inlets, creeks, bays, river and Sound from Orient to Riverhead, from Quogue to Noyack. All the photos in this show were taken with an iPhone 6 from her paddle board. All are welcome to an opening reception on Sunday, April 8th, from 2-4 p.m. in the Library Gallery. In the Display Case: Pysanky (Ukrainian) Eggs Carrying on a family tradition that has spanned several generations, Pat DeRidder and her grandchildren look forward to Easter each year and the making of Pysanky Eggs, an ancient art form. There are several thousand different symbolic motifs in Ukrainian folk designs; the DeRidders use both these and their own original designs to decorate eggs of all sizes. Pat says, “It’s a joy to spend this special time with the grandkids creating these beautiful treasures.”

Take A Chance! — Many of our exhibitors generously donate a piece of their art to raise funds for the Library. You can support this effort by participating in The Friends’ Art Raffle at the Circulation Desk. Tickets are only $1 each.

During the exhibition, t-shirts will be available to purchase with images from the book. All proceeds from the sales of the t-shirts will be donated to S.P.A.T. to aid with their efforts to restore shellfish to the bays. Spring 2018

Bev’s Book Beat “Some books are so familiar that reading them is like being home again.” ~ Louisa May Alcott Reading slumps. Sometimes they happen, even to me. Since one of my joys is reading, to have fallen into slump upsets me. Books take me places I've never been, educate me about history I didn't live through or know much about. Books help me forgot what's going on around me as I immerse myself in another world, even for a little while. While I had reasons for this downswing, I still felt sad to be missing an important part of my life that I've enjoyed since I was old enough to read and feel the magic of a book. Trying to get back “on the page,” so to speak, I finally decided I had to find a way to tackle my downturn head on. I went back to some “old friends.” I went to books that had made me fall in love with reading, saying, “Hello again, To Kill

a Mockingbird! Nice to see you again, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn! Sunne in Splendour, nice to realize once again Richard III wasn't the awful person/king once vilified by biased historians. And good day, Captains and Kings; you are as reverent today, maybe more so, than when I first read you in the 70's.” My winter reading was a trip down a memory lane of books, remembering the first time I read them, where I was at that time in my life, and what had been going on around me. More importantly, my trip reminded me why reading is important and such a joy. Reading is never a waste of time; it is a time you give to yourself. Time spent reading nurtures, teaches and enriches you in ways you don't realize until you

finish the book. My list of books to read has grown. Books I had been looking forward to but said not now, I plan to read. Mystery, fiction, non-fiction, thriller, biography, here I come.....I am going to have a great spring and summer with so much to get lost in. “Imagine this magical book that the instant you touch it, it can sense it's the book you need at that moment.” That book is always out there; we just have to find it. (Thanks loonylovesbooks; foreverbookish) Happy Reading!

The New York Historical Society with our FREE Pass

The museum opened the new Center for Women’s History–the first of its kind in the nation within the walls of a major museum. The Center reveals the untold stories of women who have shaped and continue to shape the American experience. As the centerpiece of the transformed fourth floor, the Gallery of Tiffany Lamps features 100 illuminated Tiffany lamps from our spectacular collection, displayed within a dramatically lit jewel-like space.
