Jamestown PTSA General Membership Minutes October 13, 2014 I. Meeting was called to order at 5:35 pm by Laura Tripp, PTSA President. Additional attendees were: Sue DiPette – 2nd VP Michael Wells – Treasurer Amy Unger – Secretary Louise Denkins – Membership Christy Grubbs – Reflections Dr. Worley – Principal April Knowles – Staff Rep II.

Minutes from September 8th Executive Board Meeting were approved.

III.

Principal’s Report: Dr. Worley thanked the PTSA for the support during Homecoming. Interims will be sent home soon, please encourage parents to check Parent Vue for any information regarding their child’s classes. Teachers are communicating with parents to close the loop for scheduling the conferences. This is the first time there is a school wide conference night. She wanted to know feedback on there not being a Back to School Night this year. Sue DiPette responded that she wanted to be able to see the teachers at least one time. Picture Day is scheduled October 27 th and 28th. Fridays the students have Advisory Enrichment Period (AEP) for 30 minutes. JHS is piloting this initiative for WJCC School Division and the goal is for the students to take ownership of their academics and be able to communicate directly with the teachers for conferences. Teachers are working with the students within their group to formulate the best plan for the students to take responsibility for their own learning.

IV.

President’s Report: Laura thanked Louise Denkins for coordinating the sale of the green water bottles during lunch periods for homecoming week, even though there was only one sold. She also thanked Deb Foret for coordinating volunteers for coat check and water distribution at the Homecoming Dance. Bottled water was sold during the homecoming dance were $.50 for small and $1.00 for large; profit was $49.50. Additionally, water coolers and cups were available for students, free of charge. Thank you to April Knowles and Michael Wells (freshman) for working together and getting the PTSA webpage up and running.

Committee Reports a. Membership (Louise Denkins): 272 members so far, 41 staff members, 41 students, and 190 parents.

b. Hospitality - Deb Foret (Absent) sent email report and thanked everyone who volunteered during Homecoming. c. Reflections - Christy Grubbs reported deadline for submissions to the JHS office is Oct 17th. Spoke with the Fine Arts teacher and they are using the reflections categories as a project selection for the students. WJCC PTAC Deadline is Nov 7 th. d. Mini Grants - Claire Jacobs (absent) will be sending out more information soon. In order to be awarded a mini grant teachers must be a current PTSA member. e. Communications – Updates to the JHS PTSA website are being accomplished by Michael Wells (freshman) and Mrs. Knowles. Currently we do not have a Communications Chair; if someone is interested then we can coordinate to accomplish a newsletter. We have a centralized email for JHS PTSA it is [email protected] f. After Prom – Need a chairperson. It is best for it to be a freshman or sophomore parent; however Jr/Sr parents may want to be involved since it’s their children’s prom. Students can also be on the committee if they are PTSA Members. g. SAT/ACT Prep - Sue DiPette reported Practice SAT Test (Kaplan based program) was held on Oct 4th, 23 students took the test (22 paid and 1 scholarship) at a charge of $15 per student. The spring session will be Saturday March 7th. There will be a link on the JHS Website to pre-register for the test, which will be administered at JHS. The test is open ALL students even if they are enrolled in a different school; will reach out to Lafayette and Warhill guidance department. h. WJCC Scholarship – Need Chair. i. PTAC – Laura Tripp will be Jamestown Rep. Next meeting will be Mon, Oct 20 at James Blair Bldg. Michelle Clauberg is WJCC Division Reflections Chair. PTAC President remains vacant. j. Programs / Fund Raising – Nahed Kotrola (1st VP) - Absent VII.

Old Business: a. Audit was approved for the 2013-2014 JHS PTSA. b. Revised By Laws were approved.

VIII. New Business: Looking of fundraising ideas for the PTSA. Unable to sell Chik-f-la biscuits in mornings prior to school, since this would take away from the use of the cafeteria breakfast. Cannot sell them during lunch for same reason. IX.

Announcements: Next meeting will be held on Monday, November 10th.

JHS PTSA October 13, 2014 Treasurer’s Report Our beginning checkbook balance was $7582.06. Since our last meeting, the PTSA received $844.50 in income. Our income was: $480 in dues and round-ups $315 from the SAT test $49.50 in water at the dance Our expenses were: WJCC PTA Council dues for $75.00 Hospitality expenses of $179.18 Membership expenses of $23.18 Our ending checkbook balance was $7879.70.
