Jamestown PTSA General Membership Minutes November 10, 2014 I. Meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm by Laura Tripp, PTSA President. Additional attendees were: Nahed Kotrola – 1st VP Sue DiPette – 2nd VP Michael Wells – Treasurer Amy Unger – Secretary Louise Denkins – Membership Christy Grubbs – Reflections Dr. Worley – Principal April Knowles – Staff Rep II.

Motion to approve Minutes from October 13, 2014 General Membership Meeting by Sue DiPette, second by Christy Grubbs, unanimous approval.

III.

Principal’s Report: Dr. Worley encouraged all to vote for JHS senior Brady Holcomb’s video Limits. He is one of 4 finalists in the Hampton Roads Distracted Driving video contest sponsored by Hall Automotive, Cox Cable, and Geico. He is the only public school student in the top 4 and JHS will win a cash prize of $3500.00 if he wins. Please support this great cause and great filmmaker! There is a link on the JHS main website. December 1st is Theater State at Charlottesville. Cross Country is still competing. Mrs. Haskins returns to work on December 3 rd.

IV.

President’s Report: Laura thanked Christy Grubbs for all her work with Reflections, she also thanked Louise Denkins for her continued push for new members. On the night of Parent/Teacher conferences we had a membership table set up, but no new members.

Treasurer’s Report: Michael Wells submitted November Treasurer’s Report attached.

Committee Reports a. Membership Louise Denkins: 283 members so far, 52 staff members, 41 students, and 190 parents. b. Hospitality Deb Foret – Halloween Mailbox Treats were accomplished, Louise Denkins scheduled for November Mailbox treats. c. Reflections Christy Grubbs – 31 submissions in 4 categories this year, last year there was only 5 submissions in 3 categories. Congratulations to the following students who have won the JHS PTSA Reflections contests and have been submitted to the WJCC PTAC: Connor Steely for photography; Gabrielle Rente for literature; Maddie Stannard for visual arts and Brady Holcomb for film production. d. Mini Grants – Claire Jacobs distributed the applications for submissions for mini grants request. In order to be awarded a mini grant teachers must be a current PTSA member. e. Communications – Updates to the JHS PTSA website are being accomplished by Michael Wells (freshman) and Mrs. Knowles. Mrs. Knowles will put the mini grants application on the website for the teachers to access electronically.

After Prom – need a chair person, it is best for it to be a freshman or sophomore parent. Students can also be on the committee if they are PTSA Members. g. SAT/ACT Prep Sue DiPette – $15 charge for each student for practice test. The spring session will be Saturday March 7th. There will be a link on the JHS Website to pre-register for the test; they will be administered at JHS. The test is open ALL students even if they are enrolled in a different school, will reach out to Lafayette and Warhill guidance department. h. WJCC Scholarship – Need Chair. i. PTAC – Laura Tripp JHS Rep – Tim Banyard from William and Mary attended the PTAC meeting and gave a presentation on the upcoming Film Festival. WJCC presentation on Vue to help parents understand the features Vue has to offer. j. Programs / Fund Raising – Nahed Kotrola (1 st VP) VII.

Old Business: a. Water Bottle Sales – if we have donations of water bottles than the PTSA will not sell them during an event. b. Chick Fil A Sales: Per Dr. Worley, “Federal law prohibit the selling of any food during breakfast or lunch times.” Since there are Clubs that have and most likely will continue to sell biscuits on exam days during the 15 minute breaks, PTSA will most likely not sell Chick Fil A. c. By Laws: The bylaws revision has been approved and an electronic copy is attached. The original signed/sealed copy of bylaws was delivered to JHS and will be kept in the JHS PTSA Secretary Binder.

New Business: a. Fundraising Ideas: Initiated the “For the schools” website for cashback rewards, sign into http://www.fortheschools.com/cashback-stores which covers about 1000 stores including Walmart, BestBuy, etc… Every time you shop on-line, you can earn cash back for our school! Just make sure when your register on line to select JHS school for cash back. b. Concession Stand sales during Athletic events. Dr. Worley suggested to talk with Coach Samuels and the Athletic Boosters. Nahed will follow up. c. Valentine’s Day Roses – Nahed will work with Deb Foret to coordinate pre-orders and sales during lunch…more info to follow on exact prices and wholesale availability. d. Spirit Nights possibilities i. Papa Murphy’s (Dec) – Christy Grubbs ii. Buffalo Wild Wings (Jan) – Amy Unger iii. Moe’s (March) – Christy Grubbs iv. Menchies (May) – Christy Grubbs. v. Announcements: Next meeting will be held on Monday, December 8 th.

Our beginning checkbook balance was $7879.70. Income: Since our last meeting, the PTSA received: $10.00 in income from one membership and round-up donation. Expenses: Our expenses were: VA and National PTA membership dues for $884.00 covering 272 members Our ending checkbook balance was $7005.70. Our bank balance is $7075.20 because of one check not being cashed: #959 May 1 Chic-Fil-A
