Michener Elementary School Debra Risner, Principal 104 Dawes St. Adrian, MI 49221 Phone: 517-263-9002
Dear Parents and Community Members: We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for Michener Elementary. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mrs. Deb Risner for assistance. Michener Elementary is a Title 1 Schoolwide building. For 2010-2011, Michener Elementary made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. We received a grade of A on the “Education Yes” Report Card, also. While we are pleased to have reached these important goals, we are continuously working to improve instruction to better prepare our students for the twenty-first century. For the 2010-11 school year, Michener Elementary also made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. We received a grade of B on the “Education Yes” Report Card. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in achieving these goals. Our attendance rate percentage fell to 91.9% from 94.8% in 2009-10 (which is below the state average 94%), and continues to have a negative effect on the learning of some students at Michener. Our goal is to have every student in school, on time each day to support quality learning. The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site: www.theadrianmaples.com or you may review a copy from the Michener office. 1. Process for Assigning Pupils to the School Adrian Public Schools has set physical boundaries to establish the Michener Elementary attendance area. However, the district participates in out–of district School of Choice, so physical boundaries are not the only criteria used to assign students to our building. The dates for submitting Schools of Choice paperwork for the 2010-2011 school year are as follows; February 17 through September 19, 2011.
2. School Improvement Plan Michener is a Title 1 Schoolwide building. We compiled the necessary data to complete the Comprehensive Needs Assessment and the other nine components to achieve Schoolwide status. We are currently in our third year of implementation of our school improvement goals in math, reading and writing. Throughout the school year, we analyze student achievement data to update our goals to best meet the needs of our students. For the 2011-12 school year, we will continue to implement the Success for All reading program, our 90 minute time of direct, differentiated reading instruction. Additional focus will be on problem-solving in math, with emphasis on working with geometric shapes and making connections. Our writing focus will continue to be increased emphasis on using descriptive vocabulary and improved organization. In addition, we will introduce new science materials in grades Kindergarten, third and fourth grades with grades one and two to take on the new materials next year. 3. Specialized Schools The students of Adrian Public Schools receive special education services through the Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD). In addition to the specialized schools, students receive diagnostic testing, school psychology, school social work, physical and occupational therapy, career technical education, special needs training and speech pathology services. The Lenawee Intermediate School District provides educational services to students from birth through age 26 that have severe handicaps. Students with severe physical, mental, emotional or sensory impairments may receive their educational program at a classroom operated by the LISD. One hundred twenty-nine (129) students from Adrian Public Schools attended LISD classroom programs during the 2010-11 school year. The LISD operates the Laura Haviland Program for elementary, middle and high school students with severe emotional and behavioral impairments. Twelve (12) students from Adrian Public Schools attended Laura Haviland during the 2010-11 school year. In cooperation with the Lenawee County Probate Court, the LISD operates the juvenile education program housed at the Maurice Spear Campus. LISD operates special education classrooms in local districts including classrooms for students with physical or other health impairments and hearing impairments in Madison; and classrooms for students with cognitive impairments in Tecumseh and Adrian. Nine (9) students from Adrian Public Schools attended these programs during the 2010-11 school year.
The LISD PREP Academy provides educational programs for teen parents from Lenawee County. During the student's instructional program, childcare support is provided. Seventeen (17) students from Adrian Public Schools attended the LISD PREP Academy during the 2010-11 school year. The LISD TECH Center offers career technical education programs for high school juniors and seniors. One hundred thirty-two (132) students from Adrian Public Schools attended the LISD TECH Center or participated in the co-op/work experience program during 2010-11. This equals 27.8% of the junior and senior population for this school district. 4. Core Curriculum Michener Elementary teachers follow the designated curriculum that has been approved by the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education. Our core curriculum follows the Michigan Curriculum Framework and is aligned with the Grade Level Content Expectations for the state. Core groups of teachers from our district work periodically to make sure that our content and standards are vertically aligned. A copy of the core curriculum is available for your review in the Michener Elementary School Office. 5. Student Achievement District wide and building wide formal writing, reading and math assessments are administered to all Michener students at least three times during the school year. A writing rubric is used based on the State Standards for the building formal writing assessment. In September, January and May, all of our students (K-4) were screened using the DIBELS basic early literacy indicators. In February and May, our second, third and fourth grade students also were assessed on the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), which is a nationally normed assessment that measures academic progress in math and reading. We will continue to use these assessments to measure our students’ academic growth and refine our teaching to meet our students’ needs. 6. Parental Involvement at Parent Teacher Conferences Michener Elementary strives to involve parents to establish two way communications to improve student achievement. Below are the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 percentages of parents who attended conferences. Fall

We believe that involving parents in their children’s education will support improved student learning and result in a reduction of student disciplinary problems. Our school clearly works best when parents take an active interest in their children’s education and form partnership with our school to encourage their children to do well. Our goal is to meet with all parents on a regular basis. Points of Pride Michener Elementary takes great pride in our:
Success for All differentiated reading program that offers flexible reading groups based on each student’s individual learning needs.
CraftPlus Writing program using the writing workshop model.
CHAMPs, our proactive and positive approach to classroom management.
Universal breakfast- every child has the opportunity to eat breakfast free of charge.
Hands-on math and science curriculum
Quality art, music and physical education instruction
Named “School to Watch” by the Midwest Education Trust, a national advocacy group that focuses on improving public education and eliminating the achievement gap between students of different races and economic backgrounds.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Debra Risner, Principal
