Are you Prepared Get ready for H Information provided by: Hurlburt Field Emergency Management According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), on average, 12 tropical storms, 6 of which become hurricanes form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 30 each year. Preparation is one of the keys to alleviating some of the stress involved when storms hit the area. It’s essential to understand the terminology and therefore severity of any oncoming storms, which items are essential for supply kits, the location of installation and local area shelters and also, what to expect if the active duty member in your family is assigned to the Ride-Out Team. Hurricane Conditions (HURCON) In addition to information circulated by the local media, the following messages will be posted on the Hurlburt Field Marquees. Unless
the message reads “Exercise”, these are the actual hurricane conditions in the area. HURCON 5: General Hurricane Season June 1-November 30 HURCON 4: 96 Hours from onset of 50kt/57mph winds HURCON 3: 72 Hours from onset of 50kt/57mph winds HURCON 2: 48 Hours from onset of 50kt/57mph winds HURCON 1: 24 Hours from onset of 50kt/57mph winds HURCON 1E: 50kt/57mph winds are occurring and other dangerous conditions associated with the storm are present. HURCON 1R: Storm hazards have passed but damage may persist. Recovery operations begin. Initially, only emergency responders are released to move about.
Disaster Supply Kits Plan for a supply that will sustain your family for three to seven days. Pack it up ahead of time, if possible. If a storm arrives, all the items will be in one place or, if evacuating, items will be ready to load into your vehicle. A kit should include: • Non-perishable food • Bottled water (1 gallon per person per day) • Non-electric can opener • First-aid supplies • Prescribed medications • Portable radio & flash lights • Batteries
• Change of clothes & extra shoes • Toiletries/hygiene Items • Cash & important papers • Blankets, pillows, sleeping bags & inflatable mattresses, • Diapers and formula (if needed) • Books, toys and games for children
Also, ensure your vehicle is fully fueled and ready for any necessary travel.
