Check-In To Fitnesss provided by Hurlburt Field Fitness

We all need a little help with exercise sometimes, whether we’re just starting out or we’ve been at it for a long time. Still, there are people who shy away from personal training, unsure of what they’ll get out of the experience or whether it’s worth the money. There are a number of reasons people work with personal trainers. Some want an individualized program so they can lose weight or get in shape while others simply need to be held accountable for their workouts. Wherever you are in your exercise journey, a personal trainer may be just what you need to take it to the next level. Fitness assessments are usually a starting point with the trainer and client to determine a baseline. These assessments may also be performed before and after an exercise program to measure their client’s improvements in physical fitness. They may also educate their clients in many other aspects of wellness besides exercise, including general health and nutrition guidelines. Qualified personal trainers recognize their own areas of expertise. If a trainer suspects that one of his or her clients has a medical condition that could prevent the client from safe participation in an exercise program, they must refer the client to the proper health professional for prior clearance. The reasons for hiring a personal trainer vary, but once you have made that decision here’s what you should expect and look for. You want someone who is certified, insured and has some experience in training. You want to be challenged, not bored, yet learn proper technique to feel comfortable on you own. If you’re training for a marathon, a golf tournament or some other type of sport or event, an experienced trainer can help you figure out what you need to do to stay strong without taking away from your other training. They can also help create a training program and map out a plan for the coming event. Just make sure they’re experienced in the sport you’re training for since not all trainers do sport-specific training. Credible trainers are not going to take on a client that cannot help or provide unhealthy advice to reach a goal. Finally, remember you are paying for a service, if at any point you feel the trainer is not meeting your expectations or is not working out, you can terminate the service. Hurlbut Field trainers are all nationally certified, CPR and carry liability insurance. They are available at any fitness facility and meet at various times with clients. Contact any fitness facility or visit www. MyHurlburt.com for more information.

Hurlburt Field’s CDC Offers VPK by Sharon Brewer 1 SOFSS/FSF

Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is FREE to all 4-5 year olds, funded by the state of Florida, giving children a jump start by preparing them for school and enhancing their reading, math, language and social skills. By developing the skills children need to become strong readers and students at an early age, children are more likely to be successful in school. VPK classrooms offer high-quality programs that include high literacy standards, developmentally appropriate curricula, manageable class sizes, and qualified teachers. Parents who reside in Florida are very fortunate to have this unique opportunity available to their child(ren) as many states do not offer such an experience.

The Inclusion Specialist for Early Learning Coalition (ELO) of Okaloosa-Walton counties promotes ongoing inclusion of all children in Florida’s child care and early education network. The ELO offers a variety of assistance programs to staff both in centers and family care homes. This includes:

VPK: Children with Special Needs

• Information on how to include children with special needs • On-site support and training • Consultation and technical assistance • Referrals and resources • Strategies for varied disabilities • Child development and special needs concerns • American with Disabilities Act (ADA) • Links to community resources • Collaboration with families/family support

Preparing for preschool is a difficult process in itself, and when you have a child with special needs it can seem even more overwhelming.

For more information about the VPK program offered, contact any of Hurlburt Field’s CDC or visit www.MyHurlburt.com.

Get your Degree Military Tuition Assistance by Dr. Darla Rush 1 SOFSS/FSD

Each active duty Airman has a maximum benefit of $4,500 per fiscal year for military tuition assistance (TA) that can be used to pursue an approved education goal. The funds are payable at the rate of $250 per credit hour or $187.50 per quarter hour. In order to access this funding, Airmen must have an approved education goal and need to become familiar with the Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC). While use of TA benefits is always encouraged, the Education Center has begun a new program to enhance awareness of the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree and its importance. The new program is called the CCAF Processing Line and is modeled after a deployment processing line. Airmen without a CCAF degree are identified within each Special Operations Wing unit. Units will then assign a squadron mentor from their pool of SNCOs who have attained their own CCAF degree. Modeling the deployment processing line, Airmen who attend the CCAF Processing Line will process through four stations. First, mentors will meet with Airmen from their unit to discuss the importance of CCAF for career progression. Next, Airmen will meet with Education Center counselors to discuss

their CCAF progress report, how to interpret the report, and what they need to do to move forward towards their own CCAF degree. The Airmen will then be given a tour of the Education Center and will meet representatives from each of the on-base schools. Finally, the Airmen will meet one-on-one with the unit mentor and discuss their action plan. The CCAF Processing Line is aligned with the enlisted force structure, para 3.1.4.1 which states, “Junior enlisted Airmen should earn a CCAF degree to further expand their professional development and technical expertise.” It goes on to say in 4.1.16, “NCOs should enroll in and complete the CCAF degree, if not already earned, and encourage completion by subordinates.” The CCAF degree is required for promotion within the SNCO ranks. This is a fairly new program that the Education Center offers, interested units may contact Dr. Darla Rush at [email protected]. Daily education customer service is offered Monday through Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm. Wednesday service hours begin at 8:30am. The Hurlburt Field Education Section organizational box is [email protected] and the customer service counter direct line is 884-6724.

he symbiotic relationship between the lucid, challenging game of golf and the fast paced ops tempo of Hurlburt Field is natural, necessary even. Gator Lakes has stood as an on-site oasis for decades on the Hurlburt Field landscape, offering players a welcome escape from the demands of military life with 18 holes of championship level play. The links spread across immaculately groomed greens and fairways, challenging water hazards, bunkers, sand traps, and yes, even the occasional passive encounter with the animal that lends its name to the course. The greens are blanketed in rare Paspalum Grass that is uniquely designed for this climate to ensure consistent playing conditions regardless of weather and temperature fluctuations. It is one of only a handful of courses in the region with this particular grass and their immaculate greens are among the best in the area. Gator Lakes holds its own among local golf courses, that’s saying something, considering our close proximity to some of the greatest courses in the nation. Many, like TSgt Joseph Coutain fall in love with the sport immediately, regardless of how little love the course may reciprocate. As Coutain

WHERE THE HAZARDS BITE BACK said, “I was just cutting the grass and wrestling geese in the water hazards for the first 12 holes.” Then the course threw him a pass, and suddenly his stroke was on point. He heard that perfect note of contact between club and ball, tink, that launched the ball through the air and was instantly hooked. Coutain’s first game of golf was at Gator Lakes for a squadron function. To him, it’s ground zero of his love affair with the sport, and I know there are many that share a similar story. “No matter where I go, I can always find a golfer. The game gives you the opportunity to create a bond with colleagues outside the professional arena, and the players on this course are always eager to share helpful tips to improve your game.” He has been playing ever since that friendly tournament four years ago, and upgraded his original outfit of borrowed equipment, a sombrero, and Nike kicks to an impressive collection of high-end clubs, proper golf cleats and a sharp assortment of polos, performance shorts and ball cap, all available at the Pro Shop on site. TSgt Coutain stands in the company of some of the fiercest Air Commandos, but on the course, he is simply a passionate amateur golfer. And that’s what Gator Lakes is all about.

It’s a place to shed the skin of your professional and personal demands and try your hand at mastering an unfailingly intricate and precise game. The typical day for a Gator Lakes golfer starts at Oasis Café. If you have an early tee time, players grab a renowned, loaded breakfast burrito, or for the indulgently inclined, an order of lathered French Toast. Check back at lunch for a tasty daily lunch special and a brew fresh from the tap. Players can pick up last-minute essentials from the pro-shop like gloves or tees, and affordably rent top of the line equipment from the likes of Callaway and Taylor-Made. The shop’s friendly staff will fit you for clubs to ensure your equipment is every bit your ally on the course. Before your tee time starts, players can squeeze in a few putts on the free putting greens, or even drive a few balls down the full-length driving range to get their game in check before teeing off. Gator Lakes is more accessible than ever before as it is now “Open to the Public.” Non-ID card holders can simply fill out an affidavit at the

The course is now a growing hotbed for a diverse collective of players, from juniors to seniors, active duty and civilian, men and women, without the congestion one might encounter on other local golf courses. “This is truly a championship level golf course that can accommodate all levels of play from amateur to advanced. The varying tees allow you to cater the course to your own strengths and even if you’re a strong player, you certainly won’t be bored on my course.” says the new General Course Manager Jason Woodling.

Hurlburt Field’s Exchange: Giving Back with MILITARY STAR card program by Aubrey De La Garza Airmen who reach for their MILITARY STAR cards at Army & Air Force Exchange Service facilities are helping reduce creditcard processing expenses and ultimately improving their military communities.

• Competitive 10.49 percent interest rate – one of the best retail rates.

During fiscal year 2015, bank-issued credit card processing expenses at Hurlburt Exchange facilities cost the military community more than $367,721. When shoppers use their MILITARY STAR cards, however, the Exchange avoids these costly fees.

• 10 percent off Exchange food court purchases.

“A significant portion of earnings generated from the MILITARY STAR card is returned to military communities to fund qualityof-life programs,” said Hurlburt Exchange General Manager, Myra Florence. “Avoiding costly merchant and bank fees allows us to return an even greater amount to the military community.” Over the last 10 years, the Exchange Credit Program has returned $639 million to quality-of-life programs worldwide. “Paying with a MILITARY STAR card is a simple way for Exchange shoppers to support their military community directly,” Florence said. “Using the card not only benefits the cardholder, but every member of the military family.” The MILITARY STAR card is accepted at Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard exchange facilities and online at shopmyexchange.com. Cardholders receive benefits including:

• No annual, late or over-limit fees. • 10 percent off first-day purchases.

• 5-cents-per-gallon savings at Exchange gas stations. • Free standard shipping at shopmyexchange.com. With every purchase, MILITARY STAR cardholders earn points as part of a rewards program, which launched late last year. Cardholders earn 2 points for every $1 spent wherever the MILITARY STAR card is accepted. For every 2,000 points earned, shoppers will automatically receive a $20 rewards card. For more information, shoppers can visit www.MyECP.com. The Army & Air Force Exchange Service goes where Soldiers, Airmen and their families go to improve the quality of their lives through goods and services provided. Exchange earnings provide dividends to support military morale, welfare and recreation programs. The Exchange is part of the Department of Defense and is directed by a Board of Directors, responsible to the Secretaries of the Army and Air Force through the Chiefs of Staff. To find out more about the Exchange history and mission or to view recent press releases please visit our Web site at http://www.aafes. com/about-exchange/public-affairs/press-releases. htm or follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/ ExchangePAO.
