Early exposure to hands-on learning and STEM education is one of the best ways to engage students and ultimately set them on a long-term path for success in college and a career of their choice. Camp RED will focus on English Language Learners (ELLs) in the 6th & 7th grades. ELLs benefit from the reinforcement of vocabulary and concepts through picture, graphic and video. They also benefit from being able to use technology to express themselves. Technology helps ELLs find a voice, easing the transition to a new language allowing them to infuse technology into instruction. SUMMER COMPUTER SCIENCE CAMP CAMP DESCRIPTIONS Robotics I Camp: Objective: Develop science and engineering practices Materials: WeDo 2.0 ReadyGo 24-Student Pack 5004833

WeDo 2.0 projects develop and strengthen eight science and engineering practices 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Ask questions and solve problems Use models Design prototypes Investigate Analyze and interpret data Use computational thinking Engage in argument from evidence Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information

The WeDo 2.0 software provides an excellent platform for science learning, offering an innovative way for students to model reality, conduct investigations, and use design skills. The curriculum facilitates and supports a clear, easy-to-follow journey through subjects, including: life-, physical-, earth- and space sciences, engineering and technology. Features 17 projects. Students will not only develop competencies through hands-on projects covering key science topics, they will also improve problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and integrate the use of relevant digital tools to improve computational thinking skills. Students will work collaboratively, communicating with each other as they build, discover and explore. Programming is an important part of 21st century learning. The WeDo 2.0 software teaches programming in an intuitive way – letting students bring their creations to life while sharpening computational thinking skills like logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and modeling simulations.

ROBOTICS II CAMP Objective: Teach computer science and STEM subjects using robotics Materials: EV3 30-Student Curriculum Solution 5005046

The LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3 enables students to work with open-ended problem-solving activities, in a context that makes it fun and engaging to learn science, technology, engineering, and math. The LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Curriculum Solution is the complete bundle for teaching computer science and STEM subjects using robotics in your classroom. From LEGO bricks and elements to lesson plans and assessment tools, the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Curriculum Solution contains everything you need in one convenient teaching solution. The Design Engineering Projects Curriculum delivers 30 hours of classroom teaching and is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. The EV3 software includes project briefs and inspirational material for students, teacher notes, example solutions, and instructions and ideas for building a wide range of robots. The materials are divided into three main sections: Make it Move, Make it Smarter and Make a System. Each section includes five design projects. All 15 projects follow a design engineering process, as used by real-life engineers, which provides a structured flow through the activities. Starting with a design brief explaining the challenge and culminating in a final project that can be presented to the entire class. As they complete each project, the students capture their work with the built-in digital workbook, which makes it easy to follow and assess their progress. This structure is designed to help students develop the 21st-century creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills required for success in school and beyond.

The LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Curriculum Solution enables students to learn and apply engineering design process skills using high quality motors, sensors, gears, wheels, axles, and other technical components. By using hands-on robotics, students will learn about the core concepts of technology in an interesting, engaging way. Students can use the Curriculum Solution to: • • • • • • • •

Learn and use engineering design process skills Understand and use mathematical skills and concepts, such as proportions and ratios, graphing data, and multi-digit computation Apply knowledge of science concepts, such as speed and power, motion and stability, and forces and interactions Understand cross-cutting concepts, such as systems, patterns, structure and function, and logical thinking Understand the role of troubleshooting, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project Demonstrate creative thinking and construct knowledge using technology Use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively

Engineering Camp: Objective #1: Learn the basic mechanical principles behind simple machines, then increase students’ understanding by adding complex mechanisms such as gears, cams, and working motor Materials used: LEGO Simple & Powered Machines Intro 30-Student Pack 5003502

The Simple & Powered Machines Classroom Packs come with everything needed for students to begin investigating and gaining a fundamental understanding of simple machines, structures, and mechanisms. Students will learn about engineering design using technology to understand science and applied math in real life. Using the Simple & Motorized Mechanisms solutions, students design and make models and then observe the behavior of their models. They reflect and re-design the functionality of their models, and then record and present their findings. Students build the models together, each focusing on their part of the model - strengthening their 21stcentury skills in collaboration and communication.

Objective #2: Introduce students to the history, function, structural design, geometry and strength of bridges while providing opportunities for students to acquire skills using a hands-on, inquirybased approach to information and concepts. Materials: K’Nex Introduction to Structures: Bridges

K’Nex inquiry-based lessons challenge students as they build, investigate, problem solve, discuss and evaluate scientific and design principles in action. (Aligned to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math standards.) An investigation of bridges will help students learn and experiment with the forces affecting all structures. They will also investigate concepts related to the physical properties of materials and their application in the placement, design, and construction of bridges. Bridge building requires complex engineering solutions that are based on sound mathematical and scientific concepts. As students use the K’Nex set they will have the opportunity to acquire skills through a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to information and concepts. Working cooperatively, students are encouraged to interact with each other as they build, investigate, problem solve, brainstorm, discuss and evaluate scientific and technological design principles in action.

Drone Camp: Objective: Teach how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV or UAS) – Drones are used Materials: Husban X H107C Quad copter

Drones, also called unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have no human pilot onboard, and instead are either controlled by a person on the ground or autonomously via a computer program. Drones are no longer for the military, nor are they the sole remit of the commercial sector! In fact, small, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are perfect for teaching a whole range of different subjects for your school, college, or university. Students participating in this course will: •

Understand what drone technology is as well as what are the functions of drones.

Apply hardware and structure along with motor and wiring

Create drone building and training

Compete with drones built in the program

The use of drones in the classroom has significantly increased even in the last year, because teachers are cottoning onto the fact that they are great teaching tools. Not only can many classes use the technology for subject-specific skills, drones also help to develop innovative thinking, problem solving, and encourage group participation. The course is aligned to national computer science and mathematics standards and considers objectives found in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Projects in this program will be taught and delivered in community project based learning format. Students will be actively engaged in learning about and experiencing how drones are used. Students will participate via a “Top Secret Mission”.

Special Education Extended School Year Program

The extended school year program for special education students will focus on the students’ individual educational plans which are based on the student’s ARD/IEP recommendations. Students who should be considered are those that have shown regression after a break (such as summer or Christmas) and have been indicated on their IEP report cards as not making adequate progress. Extended school year needs to be documented in the IEP and the ARD committee should make recommendations as to the number of hours per day that the student needs to attend the program. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
