Innovation y Quality y Diversity YPA is a premium aspirational brand known for its innovation, quality, and diversity. YPA provides value-added services to support historic preservation projects. Incorporated in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, YPA is the only organization of its kind in the United States. The mission of YPA is the participation of young people in the preservation of historic resources. We accomplish our mission through events, tours, research, training, technical assistance, and special projects that encourage the next generation to take a leadership role in preserving their communities. Examples include: YPA’s flagship publication, “Top Ten Best Preservation Opportunities in the Pittsburgh Area” released each May during National Historic Preservation Month; Youth Main Street Advisors video project with high school students; Wheeling Through History bike tour; and successful historic designations that protect historic sites.
Wheeling Through History YPA pioneered the Wheeling Through History bike tour as a fun way to learn about history while doing a healthy, progressive activity. YPA’s Youth Main Street Advisors Project inspired four separate high schools to produce videos on how they would revitalize their towns. These two projects exemplify how YPA engages the next generation. From rural landscapes to city neighborhoods to green buildings, YPA is committed to the participation of young people in historic preservation.

When I first established the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh in 2002, I saw it as a strategy to build a better future.
What better way to honor previous generations than to invest in young people. As I like to say, “everyone who supports the next generation is a Young Preservationist.”

YPA’s activities and publications are known for their innovation, quality, and diversity. More than 1,200 people have participated in our education programs, events, tours, research, and partnerships. YPA is more than 350 members strong from 19 states, working to engage the next generation in historic preservation. YPA operates in the nine-county southwestern Pennsylvania region that includes the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland.
