Vol. II, No. VI

Snapchat is a popular app By Clara Crowther Teens, adults, and sometimes even children often use technology. I went around McLean High School to collect some ideas about what is the most used app of 2016/2017. You’ve probably heard about Snapchat. It’s the popular mobile app that allows you to send videos and pictures, both of which will self-destruct after a few seconds of a person viewing them. Snapchat is also a fun messaging app. You can capture a photo or brief video with it, then add a caption or doodle or filter/lens over top, and send the finished creation (called a snap) to a friend. Alternatively, you can add your snap to your “story”, a 24-hour collection of all your snaps that’s broadcasted to the world or just your followers. But these are merely part of the many features within Snapchat. Yes, at its core, Snapchat is used to send photos and videos to friends. Your friends can view snaps for up to 10 seconds, and then the snaps disappear. While that’s all fine and dandy, many people are still left

stumped by Snapchat. They can’t seem to understand why someone would actually want to send pictures or videos to friends, especially if they can’t be saved. Well, they can be “saved”, because Snapchat has more to offer than what meets the eye. Snapchat is mostly a hit among teenagers, according to several research firms, though it is catching on and embracing new demographics every day. Viners (creators who used Vine), YouTubers, and celebrities, for instance, are known to use Snapchat as an alternative means of communicating with their followers. Students use these apps to “talk to their friends” and “to hang out with friends” .

Hauteans have plenty of options for restaurants By Payton Wilson Terre Haute is known to have a lot of places to choose from when going “out to eat”. I went around the school and asked some students and teachers about their favorite restaurants and how much they normally spend at that place (for two people, think a “date”).

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ANSWERS I GOT (in no particular order). Long John Silvers - $12-$18 Chinese Food - $20-$25 Fazoli’s - $20-$25 Buffalo Wild Wings- $25-$30 The Greek Isles.- $15-$20 (Mrs. Ellis claims that this is the best salad in the world!) Panera Bread - $15-$20 (Mrs. Mooney says she spends $40 at Panera Bread!) Olive Garden - $25-$30 Subway - $12-$15

s ’ r a e Y w e N lutions - em? h o t s e e k R u ma o y o D By Brooklin Houghton So what’s everyone doing this January? Anything new? Well, it’s a New Year and time to be a new you. Some people, like Tyler Brown, say his New Year’s resolution is to “get a job this year.” Everyone has a chance to be someone new or to change to something better. Senior Wade Walker says he “can’t wait to graduate.” Also, Krysta Norris says she wants to get her “first tattoo and accomplish my sophomore year and also I don’t want to sleep as much and pass all my classes.”

Mr. Fears would like to get into better shape during 2017 and lose a few pounds. Ms. Cache Ellis says “This year I am focusing on making myself a better person. This is my year! My focus is to be as happy as I can be and to really figure out who I am supposed to be.” Senior Kyle Hoopingarner says “I want to stop spending my money on things I don’t need to, save up and get the things I actually need.” For some people it’s to stop watching so much TV and get up to do more things and

The battle against cancer is never ending By Raeanne Jones Many Americans today are fighting cancer, lost someone to cancer, or just support cancer. Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer develops when the body’s normal control mechanism stop working. Older cells do not die, but grow out of control, forming abnormal cells. They form a mass of tissue also known as a tumor. Most common cancer for women is breast cancer, and for men it prostate, lung and colorectal cancer affect both men and women. Many children and staff at Mclean has lost someone weather it was family or friends to cancer. Miss

Weatherspoon has lost an aunt and uncle to cancer and Mr. Christjansen has lost his great grandmother. Mr. Fears said, “I lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer years ago and just recently lost a friend to breast cancer.” Treatment options depends on the type of cancer, if it has spread and your health. The goal is to kill as many cancerous cells with minimizing damage to normal cells .Three ways to get treatment are surgery, chemotherapy, Radiation therapy .The future of cancer treatment lies in the patients with an even greater level of personalization.

motivate them to do more. My personal New Year resolution is to get my car and a job so I can buy my own things. I also want to better myself by paying attention on my schooling and hangout with people that actually care to succeed. I want to be more positive and overcome the things that I have failed at to make better. I hope everyone has something they want to accomplish in 2017. Make a goal and complete it!

Venomous

The New Year Phoenix “Michael wake up, the sun is out and the temperature is now livable. It’s no longer absolute zero and the plants are no longer shriveled and ice covered. They are now green and colorful,” says Grace, twirling her dark brown hair. A sliver slips and falls in front of her peachy face. “I’m up Grace, now go check up on mother and father,” I say while yawning and stretching. Grace’s emerald eyes light up and she takes off down the rugged torn up room of the sky scraper. “Careful, remember we are on the top floor, if you fall through a hole or the ground gives way be sure to quickly activate your grappling belt.” Grace smiles and says “okay,” with a nod of her head to the side. I smile at the sight of Grace prancing down the vine covered hallway to mother and father’s room to the northern side of the building. The east and west sides of the building are too taken over by trees, thorny shrubs, spikey vines and other dangerous plants; not to mention the venomous snakes and poisonous insects that could be in those rooms. It’s been six minutes. Is Grace okay? I should go and see if she is grappled in a hole somewhere. I am worried. “It’s ok son, Grace is fine,” says my mother. Both my mother and father are coming down the hall with Grace on my father’s shoulders. “The room I slept in held up fine. Grace’s too. How about you and mother?” I asked curiously. “It held up fine. To our surprise,” laughed father. “Michael, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m eight now. I’m a big girl okay,” says Grace with a smile. I laugh and say, “Okay.” All of a sudden we could hear a high pitched shriek along with a sound similar to the old fighter jets that once filled the sky. Grace gets scared and asks, “What was that?” “It’s the Phoenix. It was once a gold eagle until genetic scientists mutated it to try and

create a way for animals and people to live in the toxic air many years ago,” says father. “But it got loose and for some reason it could not be put down. Now it is reborn every new year and for an unknown reason the ash that comes off its body acts like super-grow, causing plants to grow extremely fast and without end,” buts in mother. “So, within a hundred years centuries of pollution was fixed and earth healed,” I finally say. “In a moment we will see the beautiful beast,” says mother. “Finally, the phoenix is in sight. Look at the wings, head and tail. Do you see the singeing feathers? They are what produce the strange ash that is falling as we speak,” says father. “Wait, where is it going? I want to see more of the birdy,” says Grace, a little upset. “No one knows, but I do know one thing, we need to get to a better shelter. The plants are taking over and really fast,” I say nervously. “You’re right son, let’s move before we become part of nature and not in a good way,” says father in a rush. “Well. I hope we can one day live with the bird and nature instead of running away,” says mother. “Me too,” says father.

Most people experience anger in their lifetime. Some people, however, experience it at higher levels. In Venomous by Christopher Krovatin, the main character, Locke Vinetti, reaches this higher level of anger. This higher level of anger is called “venom”. Locke’s venom all started when he was eight years old, he was being bullied. Locke flipped, attacking the tormentor and “mangled” his face. Ever since Locke was eight his anger fits kept happening. He named them the venom. Locke became the loner at school and everyone was either scared of him or wanted to bully him. Locke tried to keep his venom away when he was around his mom and his little brother Lon, he didn’t want his brother to have to deal with it. He drank chocolate milk to help keep the venom away. He thought that he was in control but he wasn’t the venom was. Locke doesn’t want to be run by his venom but the venom wants to run him, when he meets Renee a messed up Goth girl and falls in love, the venom becomes more and more out of control. Locke joins the Tarot Gang, the gang is all of the “outcasts” who join together to become one big friend group! Locke meets a guy who has something similar to Locke’s venom, and they end up having a blowout and almost kill each other. Locke learns to control his anger. “Venomous” was a really good book Krovatin is a good Author, the book had these little images that was like a comic and it really added to the experience of reading the book to look at the pictures and have the description. Try this book out and you might like it.
